I have a 1916 Anacs VG8 SLQ that I am looking to trade down to a Good condition one, to free money up for other coin ventures.
Right now I have a choice between a Anacs G4 with no problems, or a NGC good details improperly cleaned. The NGC look very nice and were it not slabbed the average collector would not it's been cleaned as it has nice dark toneing in the recesses. It has bits of the date still showing and a solid VG8 or VG10 back with clear eagles wing tips. Overall a strong G6
I dont have pictures of either coin.
So here is my question, would you rather own a G4 uncleaned or a strong G6 that had been cleaned ?

Uncleaned. A problem coin will ALWAYS have the problem.

I wouldn't trade it down for any reason. Once that coin is gone you will eventually regret replacing it with one in a lower grade. But, if you just have to do it then you should go with a problem free uncleaned coin as it will hold its value and probably appreciate long term and the cleaned coin will still be a cleaned coin. Yeah, I would stick with the better ANACS VG8 coin and do without others for awhile. If you have to do this I would take the problem free over the cleaned.

I would take the one with the best details and most visible date.

Uncleaned, dude. Better resale.

Just how much cash will the trade-down free up? Is the coin going into a Dansco album or staying in the TPG holder?

Regardless of the grade, any coin that is stated as cleaned will always be worth less, more difficult to sell, make you wish you didn't buy it.

I was leaning towards the natural coin, and that seems to be the majority opinion.. It seems uncleaned trumps a coin with better detail...
Of course resell considerations are of prime concern as I don't plan on having my coins buried with me !

If I liked the appearance of the cleaned coin better I would not take the one I liked less just cause of better resale later. I don't care about resale, but I do care about having coins I like in my collection for the next 30 years. Not too long ago I downgraded one of the Conder tokens in my collection from a MS red/brown coin to a brown XF simply because I liked the color better.

Thanks Conder, I like both coins, but cleaned coins seem to have a real stigma and that would bother me....
