I was sifting through my change today and found this Australian $2 coin dated 2008.

The rim below the queens head is significantly thicker compared to the rim above her head.

Is there anything special about this coin?

SNAP!
I got one almost as off center today (2009 $2), although the thinnest part on mine is near the date and interestingly the reverse is only slightly off center and hardly noticeable while the observe is quite noticeably off center... what is the reverse of yours like LukeDarling?

Also in the same handful of change from the Vietnamese takeaway a '79 double bar 50c (very well circulated, but still fun)

The reverse appears normal!

I don't know much about error coins, is this a mule?

A mule? I don't believe so... sorry...
Yass or one of the other members may see this and may be able to explain better why one side is off center while the other is not - misaligned dies? I am guessing...

If only one side is skewed and the other is normal, then it's a "misaligned die". If both sides are skewed in the same direction to the same degree, then it's an "off-centre strike".

Misaligned dies and off-centre strikes generally don't attract too much of a premium unless part of the actual design of the coin is missing. That doesn't mean they're not worth keeping if you find them "for free" in change.

Miss aligned coins are pretty common, you can find them quiet easily in our coinage, but I see they are sparce in HK coinage. Maybe it is the way the mint produces the coins.
