I just acquired this coin and it looks a bit suspicious to me. It's 37mm, weighs 24.3 grams and is not magnetic. It has clearly been polished recently, but I don't care as long as it's real. Thanks in advance for any insight.
Based on the weight given and the condition I see here - something is definitely WRONG. The Guatemala Peso was a 27 gram coin - so wear to 24.3 grams suggests a coin that is almost slick. Coins do not lose that much weight and look this good.
This coin has admittedly been "messed with" - but I see no evidence that points to the removal of enough metal to account for the loss of weight. So even if it is not magnetic I believe it is NOT silver.
I also believe that the rim is too thick - pointing to the very likely case of a cast transfer technology being used to make the die/mold. Some transfer processes involve a material that shrinks when it dries. To produce a coin of the correct size the forgers widen the rim to make up the difference.
Next the fields seem to show small lumps consistent with casting. There can of course be damage to the fields causing small dimples - but there is no post strike damage that causes raised lumps on a silver coin.
Finally, there are a few irregularities in the levels of the "fields" that points to a mold as opposed to a die. See the end of the word Peso for an example. That to me appears to be a defect caused when the mold was peeled off TOO EARLY. A semi-hardened casting (in a semi plastic state) when peeled off is often damaged by the process. This irregular field area looks just like that has happened.
