I plan to go to my first coin show this Sunday. I was wondering if I should bring along some coins I want to sell. Do they just sell coins at the shows or is there some buying going on? Anyone with some experience?

Yes the dealers are buying, they have to get their stock somewhere.

That's good info, guys! I am thinking about going to my first coin show as well in a couple of weeks and was wondering just what the heck I would do there aside from looking at all the pretty coins I couldn't afford to buy. Now, I'm thinking I might bring some of my " Overstock" coins (I have a bunch of extra Capped Bust and Seated Liberty half dollars that I kept buying whenever I could get them at a good price simply because they're so nifty and old) and maybe trade them to upgrade some of the coins in my 7070 album. Like, maybe finally find a decent Draped Bust large Cent. I doubt I would actually get anything at a "bargain" price, but somehow it's easier to think about buying an expensive coin for "only" 3 or 4 other coins instead of just handing over a wad of twenty dollar bills...

I rarely pay the purchase price for a coin unless I buy online. Usually I bring trades and put them down with a little cash.

There will be some dealers buying for sure. They will usually have a sign that says they are buying, but you can always ask.
At the coin show this past weekend I noticed that many of the dealers were asking people if the were buying or selling.

Ice cream and coin dealers come in many flavors. Looking at coins is a great pastime, but take some time to chat with those behind the tables, those who are less busy. Tap their knowledge. Avoid grading controversy. Ask if they buy, their preferences. If you're looking for specific coins, it's best to get there early. When sales have been slow, some dealers will try to make up for that with buying. Also, in an effort to meet expenses, some dealers may be more inclined to blow-out material just before closing time. Keep in mind that most dealers started out as collectors, themselves; and, may still be so. Then too, just because someone is selling coins they may not be a dealer, per se. Best to refrain from making assumptions and enjoy the learning. IMHO, virtually every table has some bargain that awaits discovery ... This oldtimer's best finds have been at shows and shops.

As others have noted, bringing coins to sell or trade with the dealers on the bourse is accepted practice and quite common. Just remember they are there to make a profit so go in with realistic expectations. A caution: Altough trades and purchases with dealers is acceptable, conducting business with others (not dealers who have paid the bourse fee) is bad form on the bourse floor. If another non-dealer shows interest in your coins, quietly leave the bourse and conduct that business outside the forum.

Also, be sure to bring your own loupe.

Fine advise from SeatedNut - etiquette and decorum. Upon the advise of one dealer, long ago, I scratched my initials on my loupe that I take to shows. My wife presented me with a new loupe with a built-in light at the last big show we attended. Some dealers lack adequate lighting.
