I'm thinking about bidding on this GSC 1921-D dime auction. Obviously, it's not "choice uncirculated", it's a strong XF or maybe AU, but gross over-grading is par for the course on ebay. And the pictures are obviously pretty enhanced, as is par for the course for the seller. Does anything about the coin jump out at you as a problem? The color, I'm sure, is not everybody's cup-o-tea (fingerprint toning?) - but is there anything sticking out that might make it a "problem" coin? The seller has a good return policy, so I'm not too worried, but want to solicit other opinions.

I saw that one as I browse to upgrade the one I got a while back from a CCF member here. I like the overall strike but find it distracting from the background field (acid cleaning to hide scratches with bad result?), that said the coin will go over $600 easily.
I am looking for one that's mark free as possible, minor toning wont bother me, as long as it has eye appeal. Of course, this mean big bucks!

Dark color, by itself, doesn't necessarily bother me, as long as it's not associated with corrosion or environmental damage. I just don't want a coin that's been cleaned or screwed with by somebody... I wish I could get this one...

I personally don't like the look of the first one capn, but if you do by all means go ahead. I think that it might be harder to sell later because of the black toning(?)
I see a vertical hairline scratch on the neck and the 9 looks funny, but other than that the detail on this coin is very nice. However, I think you could find another with same detail and no black toning for a bit more.

That's sure is a nice one from Heritage. And is FSB without the designation?

I don't think they put FB designations on AU graded dimes. I haven't seen one at least. Heritage always has the nicest Mercs. Check out this 1923-S.

With the black toning and small wear, scrathes, I would rate this AU at best.

I won this one on ebay month or 2 ago, old minor cleaning as I can see very fine hairline scratches. I liked the strike, so I kept it.

That is a nice strike for the date.
Something that nobody talks about with the strike is the area between the lower diagonal band and the center horizontal band. So many are poorly struck there that it's hard to see clear separation between the sticks even on XF and AU coins (or even MS with some 1945-P). It's the first place I look and a benchmark for the coins I want in my set.

I know lots of folks do not like toned coins, but that 23S is one fine looking coin to me.

GSC - I've purchased from, they are good people and will take a coin back, if it's not as you expected, they sure come up with some nice looking type stuff on ebay.
