I hit a garage sale this weekend and ran across what I think is a pretty insane find.
This lady was selling mint sets from the late 60's through the mid 90's. Some of them for less than face value. I told her that she could take them to the bank and deposit them for face value and make more than she was selling them for... She "didn't want to bother with it".
I told her that the late 60's sets had silver value to them. She didn't care. She just wanted them gone. Evidently they were her late husbands and had been sitting in a box since he passed. She had already sold his collection but found these while cleaning in the garage.
SO... I bought em all...
There were a total of 65 mint sets. Most of them were both P and D. A couple were just from a single mint. I haven't added everything up but my initial guess is that there is around $100 face.
I spent $80.

Sweet score, nice of you to inform her at least of potential value, though she probably just wanted the memories gone at any cost. I knew a bank teller friend that received a $2.50 gold piece to deposit, she explained to the lady it was worth w a lot more from a coin dealer, the lady did not care and just wanted to deposit it, my teller friend bought it for $2.50, I bought it for $125.00 this was back in the 80's probably was worth $225.00 back then so I made $100.00, not bad for a college student at the time.

Good for you. I think you are to be commended for pointing out the value but after that, if she doesn't want to deal with the stuff then I'm glad you got it and that you were able to get it all because at least that way the coins will be in a good home -- even if you don't decide to keep them all.
I wonder if that's why sometimes somebody finds a proof coin in circulation. I had always assumed that they were stolen at some point and then put into circulation.

That was a really nice find. I would have pointed out that the sets were worth more also. It is just the right thing to do. But if she still wants to sell them, then don't argue.

7 of the sets had silver. 2 were sms with just the quarter and half.
I spent some time last night actually looking at the sets. For the most part they're what you'd expect miint sets from this era to look like. Lots and Lots of weak strikes. Almost all the dimes look super mushy. The Halves fields aren't stellar. I don't collect quarters so I don't know what to look for on those.
However... Some of the pennies are starting to get some interesting toning. Which suprises me since they're still in cello's. But some of them most definately have a fairly attractive orangish/purplish toning starting on them. I'll chalk that up to temperature extremes they experienced in the garage.
The thing I'm most excited about are the nickels. Several of the mid 70 issues look to have full steps. It's hard to tell for certain because I'm looking through the cello, but I'm kind of thinking some of those nickels are going to be broken out and examined more closely.
(edit: Oh and there were 4 proof sets.)

are you sure the "mint sets" with coins from just one mint are not proof coins instead of Mint sets? I know in the early 60's the proof sets came in an envelope like the mint sets, not sure about the later 60's

Very nice find indeed, how often do you hit garage sales in your area? Just curious.
