Hi everyone this is the 1878 Morgan I acquired a few weeks ago, I paid £18 for it although as you can see it has damage on the obverse over the ear but when I turned it over I was surprised to see the 8TF , what is bothering me is the ,how to put it 'tide' marks around the eagle, and the scratch marks to the right of the date look a bit 'coppery' although the damage around the ear is 'silvery' . I thought maybe someone had attached a brooch fitting at some time and it had been removed ? IYO Is this a genuine coin ?

Looks to be originally attached to a piece of metal for jewelry or something similar.

It appears to be genuine, just damaged.

Thanks for the replies I am only just beginning to collect and I was pleased to have a '78. So any idea what the marks around the Eagle are ?

the marks around the eagle could just be heat damage if they heated up the coin. Looks genuine to me did you take weight and measurements.

Thank you for your comments. Yes I measured and weighed as soon as I acquired it , this was the first thing I learned about buying Morgans but getting them from ebay as I do I have to take a chance on the integrity of the seller , so far I think I have been ok with my purchases. The coin weighs 26.7 gm on my scales which is as close as I can weigh at the moment,(a better set is on my wish list) and it measures 38.1 mm as do all of the coins I have. The thing is I have also knowingly bought 2 other coins one of which is stamped copy 1895 CC the other is a trick 2header,I paid only £5 altogether for both so that I would have some idea of what to look for in a fake i.e size, weight, feel, lettering, numerals, but they both weigh and measure up to spec look very good in side by side comparison until I put them under my 10x loupe then I can see the surface texture and slight date numeral differences, but if the obvious copies are that good then I will have to be very careful in the future.

Usuaully someone says that to all new members. Yes to me it also looks real but damaged. Not to bad though but for sure could have been better. I'm not sure what that L symbol is in front of a number but I guess it is for pounds in your currency. Not even sure how to make that symbol. Also, I think it is about 2 1/2 dollars approximately. Is this correct? If so that means you paid about $45 for that coin which due to the damage is rather pricy. I paid $25 for one a long time ago but was only a Ike dollar and not Silver so with that you did actually pretty good.

Yeah the £ sign is for GB POUNDS I must remember to convert to dollars so the £18 I paid was roughly $28.60 at the time I just reweighed the two header and either something is wrong with my scales or I made a mistake somehow when I bought it but its only showing 25/26 gm and does actually skip between the two so it must be on the line , my scales aren't the best and if I'm going to continue collecting I really must get myself a decent set.
