*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***I should have known better. So mad. Has anyone else ever been so stupid? To start my collection of Pennies I bought the 1859 Indian Head cent yesterday at my first coin show. Guy said it was XF, but by using the Indian cent Grading Guide I decided it may have only been a VR. Doesn't matter now. I had placed it in a Dansco type album I also picked up. Once you get a coin in it, it's nearly impossible to get it out. I wanted to take it out and put up a picture of my proud find. The knife slipped, and there is a nice new line cut into my find.  Ended up with some other goodies though. Teena

It's easy to remove a coin from a dansco album. Remove both acetate slides and push it out. No tools necessary except the digits you were born with.

The album wasn't exactly a dansco. The back was the hard plastic, then you put the coin in and place the plastic divider in the slot. I tried pushing it up from the back, but unless I broke through that plastic it was imbedded in it.

I scratched a Seated Liberty half dollar once by removing it from a 2x2 with a staple. Fortunately you can only see it if you turn it towards the light. |

Hard lesson learned....keep metal objects away from you coins. I learned when I put a big scratch across a Lincoln while improperly removing 2x2 staples. My pry tool slipped and went right across the obverse....ALWAYS pry in a direction AWAY from the coin. LOL

With staple 2x2's, I just plick (keep getting censored) the plastic with a needle. Once you do that it'll snap right out. That totally eliminates the possiblity of scratching a coin with a staple.

Once, I slightly scratched a 1912 UK one penny with one of the staples when taking it out of its 2x2, but fortunately it's barely noticeable.

The album wasn't exactly a dansco. I'm confused. If it was a Dansco Type Album, then the rear slides should be removable. If not removable, not a Dansco Type Album. Solution is to buy a Dansco, or similar, type Album. There are numerous Albums on the market where the rear slides come out. In the meantime, try bending the pages at the point where the coin is and see if that helps. |
