I love the design! That's why I've wanted one for so long. But I was thinking of getting a 2011 San Fran silver eagle. I like this way better!

Great coin! IMHO one of the all-time best USA coin designs and amongst my personal top-5 favorite from the entire classic silver commemorative series. Well done indeed to Smokey for his lovely gift. Here is a fun fact for you CCF husband/wife team of collectors ... The designers of the Oregon Trail half dollar were the husband/wife team of James Earle Fraser and Laura Gardin Fraser ... James created the side with the Conestoga wagon trekking westward towards the setting sun ... Laura designed the side with the American Indian native portrayed as as suggesting the wagons stop the trek. Both of these early 20th century USA coin artists also have other claims to fame ... James for his design of the Buffalo nickel ... and Laura for her design of several other classic USA silver commemorative. A great husband/wife team designed the Oregon Trail Half ... and it follows many years later into our CCF family of husband/wife collecting teams. Thrilled that you have one for yourself. Hoping you enjoy my brief historical description of how your new coin came to life. David

Where's the "Like" buttons? Both for this beautiful coin and Nickelsearcher's learned commentary?
Good stuff, guys.

Nickel, I did NOT know that. Thanks for the education!
I also did not know until today that there several years of this coin. I just knew VACookey (and me too) really like this coin. So I guess I will be getting more of these for further birthdays, Christmas, Anniversaries...

Quote: did not know until today that there several years of this coin. There are fourteen (14) different date/mm Oregon Trail issues to be had. Many collectors aspire to collect the entire set as a specialty commemorative series. Ample opportunity with this lovely design for future family celebrations! David

Very nice! My brother-n-law told me he inherited a nice silver piece from his Dad, but couldn't find out what it was. I think this is it from his description. Looks like it's going on my list of wants. Thanks to the person that posted it's history. This is why I love coin collecting.
