How do you identify the difference from the 2007 vs 2008 reverse? It seems like a mute difference but there is also a hefty premium for the 2007 reverse.

Thank you for your easy to see description, as expected mine is a 2008 reverse.

I'm confused. Doesn't all ASE's have the date on the front?

So what is the hefty premium for the 2007 reverse. The dealer I go to sells me these for a couple buck over spot. It doesn't matter the year.

I think what your referring to is the first significant variety of the Silver Eagle series which appeared in 2008 and is known as the "2008-W Silver Eagle Reverse of 2007 Variety."
When the United States Mint made slight alterations to the reverse design between 2007 and 2008, as explained by Foxwoods, some 2008 uncirculated coins inadvertently were struck with the 2007 reverse type die resulting in a die error. The variety is distinguishable by differences in the "U" in UNITED STATES and the dash between SILVER and ONE.

So if you find a 2008 with a 2007 design, that's what holds a premium?

Maybe this will help too......or more clearly or something.... Quote: So if you find a 2008 with a 2007 design, that's what holds a premium? Exactly.

Nope....no Proofs like this. And they're not found in the "Bullion" ASE's either, only the "Burnished Uncirculated" sold to the public directly from the U.S. Mint.

I highly doubt that your dealer sells 2008/reverse of 2007 uncirculated eagles for a few bucks over spot. 2008/ reverse of 2007 uncirculated eagles carry a hefty premium because they are were the first significant variety of silver eagles, and there were only 47,000 minted. I think you are confusing bullion eagles with uncirculated ones. They are different animals.

Some good information on this thread. Would like to add .. for those who may not know. When saying 2008 W .. by having the "W" mint mark, it means this is a collector coin, sold buy the mint. For american eagle coins. Only coins sold by the mint to the public, such as proof and burnished coins have mint marks.
Bullion eagles do not have mint marks.
