I sent 5 coins to NGC a while back to get graded. These were all passed down to me from my Grandfather. So what would you guys do? Leave them, deslab them, send them to PCGS, other suggestions?
These were the results -
1838 Half Dollar - AU Details (improperly cleaned)
1807 Capped Bust half dollar 50/20 O-112 - XF Details (improperly cleaned)
1835 Half Dollar - UNC Details (improperly cleaned)
1877 Quarter Proof - Not Encapsulated - PVC
1833 Quarter - UNC Details (improperly cleaned)

I NEVER touched these coins, I know my grandfather never touched or cleaned them. If they were cleaned, it was from original seller or before that. All were purchased from different stores back in the 80s. So for them all to be improperly cleaned is quite annoying.
Any chance that I just got a disgruntled employee and he just marked them all improperly cleaned or is it legit? I only ask this because when they posted pictures of the coins they listed the 1807 as a draped bust, so they obviously make mistakes. They made me resend the 1807 in to get reslabbed.
I will post pics later tonight.

Can you take some good pictures? Chances are someone in the past was clueless at how to properly take care of the coins. Frequently people thought that it looked better to make the coins white and usually they did it by damaging the original surfaces.

NGC seems to have a reputation about being really harsh in regards to what it calls cleaning. That's not to say they are wrong as we'd at least need to see the coins. Have you looked closely at them under magnification in bright light at different angles? I bought a raw Merc on ebay in high AU condition a while back. It looked perfectly fine in the pictures as well as when I received it. Only later (after it was much too late to return it) did I look closely under light and see very fine, parallel streaks across the obverse. You can only see it at just the right angle and it is possible the seller didn't know about it. But it is clear proof that the coin was wiped at some point.

I guess what I'm saying is look at the coins extremely carefully before deciding NGC is wrong.

Don't get me started on NGC... There was a suggestion here on the Forum a while back that the TPG's should ONLY validate the fact that the coin submitted was genuine and then let the market determine the grade and condition. I love that idea.... The basic law of supply and demand exercised by the individual without artificial bias by a very few.... Ok.. That felt good!
