Well, I may have taken a beating on this one, but you live and learn I guess. What do the Morgan experts think? With photograde next to me I would say maybe EF . I don't think it is AU, but I really haven't had enough exposure to these to be sure. Sorry, no macro photo on this one. I will take more later tonight.

Ty, I think you have a combination of a somewhat weak strike and light wear. Most of the 97-O's were poorly struck and the luster was poor on the majority also. This is a tough one as I see very little sign of bag or circulation marks. No major rim dings either, that I can see in the photo.I can still see some detail in the cotton bolls.I'm going to stick my neck out and say its in the AU range and a weak strike.

While I agree that this is a week strike with some wear, I would still expect to see a bit more detail on the eagle breast (perhaps its there but not in the photo) for it to be an AU. Also, the wear on Liberty's hair still seem a bit much even if a weak strike is accounted for. It is definitely a strong XF though.

I'd call it EF45. New Orleans coins are difficult to grade because so many of them have strike issues. I don't think that this one would quite make it to AU, but it could be possible. I couldn't make that fine of a judgement on this coin without having it in-hand.

I note that the talons are flat, as is the rear lobe of the ear, signs of a weak strike which don't normally wear so quickly. Also of note is the detail still showing in the leaves and bolls on the obverse, which *should* be showing more wear than they are for VF-EF. I might be more inclined than Susan to call this coin AU, but agree completely that the photographic detail isn't quite sufficient to be sure.

From the picture, I would guess AU.

Thanks all. I paid more than EF value, but a lot less than AU condition, so if it is even close to AU, I made out ok. Not easy to find deals on a somewhat key date coin.
