1878 Silver Dollar - Coin Community Forum

jdhinton New Member United States 1 Posts	Posted 11/05/2011 02:09 am I have an 1878 silver dollar where the D in dollar is missing the bottom portion. Completely gone, makes it look like a weird n. Can anyone tell me what this means? Report this Post to the Staff

The guy I got this from said it is an unlisted variety in the VAM book. Mine does not have the dash below the first 8 of the date and the faint line as pointed out on the one posted by Bryan1315 is barely visible on the inside edge of the D whereas Bryan1315's looks like it is a bit thicker/heavier. The coin I have is an MS-63 piece with original surfaces. SsuperDdave Moderator United States 23522 Posts	Posted 11/07/2011 1:35 pm Ed, there are a few "Broken D" 1878's - have a look here: http://www.vamworld.com/1878-P+VAMs About 2/3 down the page is the group of "Broken D" VAMs. I'm thinking yours is VAM-195, from the die cracks.
