I just purchased my first ever slabbed coin, a PCGS MS-62 BN 1909-S VDB! I recently got back into collecting after collecting as a kid in the mid 70's-early 80's, and I remember always lusting after the S-VDB. 25 years later, and I finally will have it. Of course, I sold my entire collection way back in the early '80s, so my new collection consists of about 50 common date wheat pennies that I pulled out of circulation and placed in a new Intercept Shield album and an 1835 CBH that my brother gave me from his old collection. I am going to work on finally completing the Lincoln Cent collection, and I figured I would start getting the tough dates out of the way first. As soon as it arrives, I will scan pictures. I will be concurrently working on Mercury dimes, Half Cents, and the CBH. I must say, I am really enjoying getting back into the hobby and learning from this forum.

So you will "de-slab" the S VDB to put it into the Intercept album.....?

What/how do you plan on displaying the slab label in your album for this coin ? Tape it in the back after the last page ?
I'm just curious, because I have a slabbed 14-D Lincoln that I'll probably need to do that to at some point soon. Can't have this hole in my Dansco !

Would you post some pictures of the coin and slab labels in your album so that I could see what/how you did this ?

Oh my, I didn't read that part. Are you planning to bust this one out of the PCGS plastic? I mean, you can do whatever you want with your coin, but I would NEVER bust out a key coin, especially if you are new back into the hobby. What if you change your mind in the next year or two about the hobby? The coin will be MUCH easier to resell if you leave it in the plastic! Just my 2 cents...

I will absolutely be leaving it in the slab. I have no problems having a blank hole in my album knowing that I own the coin in a slab. Lol, I didn't realize that there was something in my post that indicated I was going to de slab it. =)

There was not. It is just that eaglefoot and I like to fill the holes.

For the record, I would crack that slab in a New York minute!

While I can respect the "plastic haters" among us, for someone who is getting back into the hobby I would never recommend cracking out a key coin to someone until he/she had many many more years and many many more coins under their belt.

Once you have 10,000 posts here like jbuck, you can crack away!

Lol, yes I will leave the whole hole as a hole. I purchased it from a dealer here in California.

Probably a good recommendation, especially in this day and age where one's interest is easily changed.

So allow me to clarify my earlier comment...

If this were my coin, I would crack it! However, I will not make that recommendation to the OP; for it is his coin and brg5658 makes a good point.

I am with jbuck, I have multi-thousand dollar coins I have cracked out of slabs to put in my albums and never had a second thought about doing so. So if I had an album I was trying to complete and had a key date coin that is needed for a spot in that album I would never accept it being in a slab and knowing I have the coin, I would have to crack it out and fill that hole

Congrats on the purchase.

The S VDB is on my shortlist. I am VERY close to completing my collection of Lincolns.

It sounds like josie67 has the right idea about getting the most difficult and expensive coin(s) first. A very prudent way to approach this. Unfortunately most of us (myself included) don't get the key coins first. Good luck with your newfound interest in coins. It should be very rewarding.

I prefer albums to slabs myself, and that hole in your album with the slabbed coin would bother me eventually, but I still doubt that I could break open the slab. Don't break the slab. No wait. Fill the hole. Wait. Don't break the slab. Such a difficult decision.
