Hi. I am new to this forum, and collecting, so feel free to advise. I have this 1969 penny where the first 9 in the date has the tail bent backwards. I could not find this anywhere so doubt it is a die error, but what is it? Thanks!
Your broken 9 was caused by something hitting the coin very hard...just like the big pits above the date.
When you see something that looks unusual on a coin, often the surrounding area can answer any questions about the coin. The other 'hits' on the coin tell the story that the 9 is also heavily 'hit'.
