Your valued and learned opinions please.

I believe this is a proof .... what do you think? I'm still checking diagnostics, but the 4 looks correct, and the rust pits below the 1, along with the funky 4 are both diagnostics of the proof obverse.

If it is a proof, that's the most unfortunate rim bruise I've ever seen.

There were 15 proofs minted and 6 known survivors. Don't know from here but my guess would be AU55.

I read there were 10 known, and how many proofs were produced was unknown. I gleaned that from a completed heritage sale.

Even if it is a business strike, definitely more likely ... it sure is gonna look sweet in my 7070.

It's a beautiful coin for sure. Bowers & Dannreuther "Silver & Trade dollars of the United States" 3rd Ed. states 8 to 12 minted and 5 to 8 known. The 15 minted, 6 known is from CoinFacts.

There only 100 estimated survivors in Mint State. That coin has a good shot at MS by a liberal grader. My AU55 is the lowest I would expect it to grade.

Do you think that rim bruise is enough to keep it out of a holder?

It meant to comment on the rim and got side-tracked

It looks okay in the pic and that's a big pic (on my monitor). I would expect it to grade problem-free and is a $1500 coin to me (minimum). The toning could bring a lot more at auction.

Beautiful. Not experienced enough to say proof or not. Here's a close up of the date on a business strike currently on Heritage site in AU50 for comparison. oops - it's AU58

The rust pits aren't there and the imperfect crossbar in the 4 isn't there. The date on my specimen, matches a coin that reallized 66K at heritage.

These might help. A PCGS PR63.

The date appears a little heavier, but the crossbar of the 4 runs uphill from right to left on both coins. It could be that the die was refurbished after striking the proofs. The 4 is not broken on my coin, but the imperfection inside the 4 looks to be there.

I was looking at the image of the one I bought and was a little bit concerned about the rounded inside corners of the crosslet and where it meets with the vertical part of the 4. It has the same appearance on the PCGS coin.

I had a Shield nickel once that somebody had manipulated the surfaces on. I returned it to the seller, but it looked like the entire surface had been finely machined and polished after the fact. The work was sloppy around the stars and much of the legend.

Chance.

The vertical bars in Liberty's shield are different. I think they call them "thunes". No doubt it's a business strike, but it's a dandy nonetheless.

I'd submit it regardless. The toning is very nice.

Interesting note ... the 1844 proof has 4 stripes per "thune" where the business strike has 3.

I was mistaken ... both of these have 3 stripes.

Buying this coin has really raised the bar for the "with Motto" variety for my type set. I feel really fortunate to have been able to swing the purchase of this one. It cost me a roll of ROTM Peace dollars and 200 dollars. I may have to wait awhile before finding that kind of deal on the later version.

It's veteran's day and the post office is closed, but I believe this one should arrive tomorrow. It was located just 3 hours east of me.

I'm going to dump the Dansco album. I had it out this morning, and the slides are all scuffed up. I think these albums are terribly dangerous to coins. I'm going to build a mahogany cabinet to house my type set, and each coin will be in an airtite capsule. You can buy the flocked lighthouse trays for about 5 dollars a shot. I have lots of leftover honduras mahogany from my trade. Seems natural to me to build a cabinet.

Of course, that means that this one, as much as I might like to know how it would grade at a TPG, will remain raw.
