Muddler .. I do like the looks of your proofs .. I just like the lower mintages of the UNC's
I don't think anyone would say that Indian Head/Buffalo dollar is not a very very nice looking
coin. I think it would be on anyone's top 10 coins to own. ...of course mine is a UNC

Absolutely stunning coins showing up on this thread ... Thanks to GR58 for the idea!

A few comments ...

I salute again Paleoguy for the incredible modern coins being shown.

As far as I know ... PG is the only CCF family member to have assembled a complete set of BU and Proof modern commemorative.

I truly enjoy those Olympic coins ... many thanks for sharing PG. I suspect that PG is being humble in that I also know PG has as well a fine selection of classic commemorative ... as well as a wide range of other collecting interests that have been generously shared with us.

PeaceBD continues to inspire me with more amazing coins ... geepers BD ... MS70 commemorative are not an everyday find!

BD photography is stunning and shows the coins to their absolute best advantage. I am working to polish that skill ... and BD has it nailed.

I know as well the BD has a stunning mini-set of classic commemorative ... some of the finest I have ever seen.

muddler continues to impress with lovely coins ... I am amazed at that 2001P Buffalo Dollar Proof. I now officially need one.

Honestly ... the family of commemorative collectors is small ... limited by price barriers and awareness of the lovely nature of the coins ... so in that regard I value and appreciate all of your contributions to this thread and to the CCF family.

Hoping my minor contributions are inspiring someone to check out the classic commemorative set.

David

#6 - 1915-S Panama-Pacific International Exposition Half Dollar

Struck to commemorate the opening of the Panama Canal ... this half dollar is IMHO part of the greatest ever commemorative set ever issued by the USA.

Visitors to the San Francisco Exposition of 1915 ... held on 635 acres in Golden Gate State Park ... could have purchased 5 separate commemorative coins.

In addition to the silver half dollar, there were available gold coins in denominations of $1, $2.50 and both 'holy grail' $50 gold coins ... round and octagonal.

A set of four coins (buyers choice on the $50 coin) ... encased in a fine leather binder ... cost $100 at the fair.

Some of you may recall the recent thread where a set just like this was 'discovered' and discussed here at the CCF:

https://goccf.com/t/70766&whichpage=1

Anyways ... fantasy dreaming over now ... back to the half dollar in my collection ...

Designed by two titans of USA coinage ... Charles E. Barber designed the obverse and George T. Morgan designed the reverse. Morgan at the time was Barber's assistant and was promoted to US Mint chief engraver following Barber's death in 1917.

I have always been impressed by Barber's obverse design ... consider that he was a man of the 'traditional times' where coinage art was reduced to classic forms and understated motif. C'mon ... we all enjoy Barber halves ... but how many consider the design to be 'artful'?

Barber broke that mold late in his career with the Pan-Pacific half dollar ... and his wonderful design of Columbia scattering flowers with a cherub (naked child) holding a large cornucopia to represent the abundance of the west is an all-time classic coinage design IMHO.

Overall IMHO ... this is one of the strongest designed coins ever issued by the USA ... I truly enjoy the overall look and value the history behind the coin.

Net distribution was 27,134 coins ... and alas 32,896 were melted in 1916 at the conclusion of the exposition.

Original issue price was $1 each of 6 for $5. Current Numismedia price for my MS66 example is $3,310.

Here is my PCGS MS66/CAC Pan-Pacific Half Dollar ... a stunning cartwheel luster coin in hand.

#8 1991-S Mount Rushmore Proof Set
Very nice!

I have those as part of the 1991 Prestige Proof set. For those that do not know, I have three Prestige Proof Sets that my mother bought me. They are the only proof sets that I will never break apart.

Another good day for seeing some really nice looking coins.

I am sticking to the list that I selected at the beginning of this thread, but I was in a semi local coin shop today and they had 4 UNC commemorative dollars I needed, I did not have the cash on me. So I will pick them up Friday or Saturday. One of the four is a Leif Ericson .. which I think would have made my top 10 list ..

But for now here is my #4
I picked it again because I really like the design.
I am not sure why, but the mint had this coin designed by
Tiffany and Co.

1999 P UNC Dolly Madison
mintage 224,403

Great coins being shown by all ... I'm home from work now and beat ... will do my best to share one more of my favorites ...

#5: 1936 Battle of Gettysburg Anniversary Half Dollar

Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in June 1937, this coin is dated 1936 ... and was intended to commemorate an event which actually occurred in 1938.

The "Blue and Grey" reunion ... as noted on the obverse legend ... did occur on July 1, 1938 as scheduled ... attended by a few living Civil War veterans and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt ...

Such was the state of USA commemorative issues in 1936 ... greed and zeal had taken over ... this lovely coin is a prime example ... and those excesses of plundering the collecting public soon led to the death of the series for many years.

Despite the problems associated with distribution of this coin by promoter Paul L. Roy ... the Battle of Gettysburg half is considered today one of the finest classic commemorative coins ever struck ... and my personal #5 favorite.

IMHO this is an astounding example of the classic USA series coin art ... combining strong design with history ...

Net distribution was 26,928 coins ... alas 23,100 went unloved at the time and were melted.

Original issue price was $1.65 ... wish I were there ... current Numismedia FMV for my MS65 example is $890.

Here is my PCGS MS65/CAC Battle of Gettysburg Half:
