I'd have to go with this Early Commemorative as my number three due to the event it signifies - the greatest loss of American lives in a single battle in American history:

For my #3 I picked 2009 P UNC Abraham Lincoln mintage 125,000 IMO - This is one of the coins that is well liked, not just from commemorative collectors. Just to show I am not totally against proof coins, here is the proof example from my Lincoln C and C set. Thinking now I should have picked my Lincoln C and C set for my #3. I was looking through my pictures file and can't believe I don't have pictures of my set .. just Abe proof coin Mintage for the proof is 325,000

Paleoguy45 - I see you posted another beautiful coin, while I was typing. That is a very nice coin!
Thinking next year will be the 150th anniversary of the battle. Maybe I will find one of those before then.

GR58 - Wouldn't it be great if the Mint (not my favorite entity these days) would come out with a 150th Anniversary Antietam Modern Commemorative Dollar next year?!

PG
Thanks, it is obviously one of my favorites.
The comparison of the proof and BU Lincoln really show the exceptional eye appeal that a proof coin will have. Nice set GR.

Wow ... outstanding coins by all! I truly appreciate the kind words all of you have shared regarding my humble contributions. Appears that I am being very wordy in my descriptions of the coins ... and I Thank You for understanding my enthusiasm to share some of the 'story' of the coins. I recognize both PG Antietam Half and muddler Alabama 2x2 as outstanding coins ... well presented indeed. GR58 Lincoln dollars are as well stunning ... and still truly enjoying fuzzy gold coins. The USA commemorative series ... classic and modern ... is an amazing set to enjoy ... Thanks for opening my eyes to some of the lovely modern coins. I believe I have a few to attempt to post tonight ... running low on energy after a long week at work. You folks are the best ... I'm really enjoying every coin that is posted. David

#4: Texas Centennial of Independence Half DollarStruck to commemorate Texas 100th anniversary of admission to the union ... this coin is IMHO the most ornate USA issue every minted. The 1936 Norfolk Half Dollar is cluttered ... this coin is ornate and reflects the excellent design put forth by Texas sculptor Pompeo Coppini. Interesting to note that the eagle on the obverse of the Texas Half was a significant departure from USA coinage tradition ... the eagle motif having been used until that time as a symbol on the reverse of USA coins. The reverse of the Texas half is a who's-who of Texas history ... and I dare you to find one small space of field that Mr. Coppini did not fill up with some design element. The Texas half dollar series spanned the years 1934 to 1938 ... and 13 different date/mm coins are available. Many collectors seek the entire 13 coin set as a specialty sub-set within the classic US silver commemorative series. My example here is a 1935-S Texas ... next distribution of 10,008 coins. Original issue price in 1935 was $1.50. Numismedia FMV for my MS67 1935-S is $830. Here is my PCGS MS67/CAC 1935-S Texas Half ... a lovely coin and my personal #4 favorite. David

One more and I will be caught up! #3: 1937 Battle of Antietam Anniversary Half DollarI promise ... I had this slotted for #3 well before paleoguy showed his lovely example as his #3. I suggest that great minds think alike. Struck to commemorate the 75th anniversary of this horrific civil war battle ... this coin is one of three classic US silver commemorative directly related to the civil war (the other two being of course the 1925 Stone Mountain Half and the 1936 Gettysburg Half). This is the only USA classic silver commemorative to exhibit an actual date ... in this case the legend September 17, 1862 as shown on the reverse commemorating the battle of that date at what is now known as the Burnside Bridge. Designed by Baltimore, MD sculptor William Marks Simpson ... who also designed the 1937 Roanoke Half shown above and the 1936 Norfolk half ... this coin has the distinction of being the only commemorative half dollar that was authorized, minted and issued in 1937. Given the abuses of the day ... this makes the Antietam half a model of good stewardship! 50,028 Antietam half were struck in Philadelphia in August 1937 ... but alas by then the collecting public had grown tired of the shenanigans going on with the series and the lovely Antietam half met with dismal sales. Sales of the coin were a failure and 32,000 Antietam halves were melted ... leaving a net distribution of 18,028 for us to enjoy today. I will share with all my joy with the Antietam that I am fortunate to have ... every single one is a treasure ... and in my case this coin is without a doubt the single most visually attractive coin that I own. Blast white ... cartwheel luster ... hammered strike ... like it was minted yesterday. A true gem .. what a joy to behold in hand. Original issue price was $1.65. Numismedia FMV for my MS67 Antietam is $1410. Here is my PCGS MS67/CAC Antietam ... my #3 favorite and the best coin I own. Sorry for the long post. David
