So we went to the Vienna coin show a couple weeks ago. I went with the quest of filling the holes in my proof nickel Dansco, specifically the War Nickels. As it is a proof book, the other coins are BU, or if too expensive, nice AU. Thats true on all my proof books.

So I go from tableto table to table. I fill some of the non war holes, but no War Nickels. NONE. At least not in high grade. Plenty of G and VG batches, but nothing else.

So I have spent the last couple weeks checking ebay. Some stuff, but nothing that isn't over priced or plain crappy. Check all my saved sellers that I use. Nothing.

Finally, I find a guy that has almost everything I need, including the 42 nickel nickel. I snap them up. Only one left. The 42D.

Now I know in high MS they are several hundred bucks. I dont need that. On this one I would take a nice AU in the 25 dollar range. Think those are out there? NO. Either they are absolutely beautiful MS 64+ coins (which I WOULD like to have, but not spending that money) or they are the well circulated type. For a non silver coin, this is getting frustrating.

Its like the 3 leggers. You can find them in high grade for thousands all the time. But a nice VG or F? Pfffftttttt, good luck.

I picked this one off ebay last week for $8.75. I'm not an expert at grading by any means, but it looked very nice overall and seemed to have nearly "full steps." I just got it in the mail today and I'm happy with it.

very nice looking coin barryg. I think you made a great choice of a coin. The war ones I had were like Vf at the best.

I actually have been considering buy 5 War nickles from a Antique Shop....They are all AU and 2 may grade MS. They all are 6 bucks each. Do you think I should snag them up?

Thanks jbuck.

1942-d nickels are not silver only P and S over the dome are (35%) silver.
They also made a 1942 philly which is not silver that has no mint mark.
There is no "d" over the dome in 1942.

This guy is selling a number that look to be in great shape. Sadly no pictures of the back but maybe worth the risk?
