*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***So after reading some posts about nickel roll searching, I decided to get a box myself. After searching through it I found 1 Buffalo nickel from 1928 and 3 War Nickels. Today, I decided to get another box. I've searched through 14 rolls while at work (its a slow night) and I have already found 1 War Nickel and 3 pre 1950 nickels. Is this about average, or am I getting lucky? Also as an aside, I also randomly asked if the bank had any halfs...well sure enough they had 4 40% half dollars score! Has anyone had any luck searching through boxes of halfs, and if so where can you get them?

I have never searched through nickels, but I guess that is quite lucky actually.
Oh and BTW, that's quite a weird username.

lol a lot of people laugh at my name. Its the first initial of my first name plus my last name. J. Izer. It has been the source of many laughs in college. However, I'm rather partial to it. I hope no one finds offense. Thanks for directing me to other sections of the forum. I think I'll order a box of halfs for fun. Also finished this box. 3 War Nickels, 1 1938s. and 1 prof (plus other random coins) Not bad overall

Nice finds, I've only searched through pennies and quarters while I was in America, found nothing but State Quarter and 2-3 wheaties! Sorry if I offended you about your name. (:

I decided to just get some nickels from the bank to hold on to for intrinsic value. The first $20 I got were customer rolls. I decided to count the rolls to prove them. Well the 3rd coin was a war silver nickel. I did find a Buffalo as well and many other before 1960. Well with that I decided to try to compile collector books. I have searched about 1000 and found about 23 silver and 30 buffalo. I think for the most part nickels have not been searched through. Pennies gone through for wheat and pre 1982 and the rest for silver. So nickels are out there yet!

Here's how I prefer to find War Nickels.... More than face value, but not as tedious as unrolling, sorting, and re-rolling huge piles of nickels. How many of these look like War Nickels to you? I'm thinking over half of them are. There are 63 coins in the lot. 2 are dated 1939 and the rest are in the 40s. I paid 22 dollars deliv'd for the pile. They should arrive tomorrow. Chance

some 'look' like silver but the dates are not readable to me. Do you have reverse? The large mint mark is on silver nickels

No picture of the reverses of this lot .... I bought on instinct. The War Nickels have a strange appearance when worn, almost like they're made of lead. It's harder to tell when theyr'e less worn. I expect about half of this lot is War Nickels. Chance

Yes good luck. I know the look but at times some look that way but are not. I could not see dates so I guess time will tell.

The same seller who sold these, sold 2 Morgan dollars, 4 franklins, 3 walkers, 3 1930s Washington quarters, a Barber quarter and a V nickel...all for 50 dollars in one lot, so they're not a coin collector. They've come across an accumulation of coins, and are selling them without doing the research. There's little reason for an old collector to accumulate nickels all from the 40s. I can only think of one reason and that's the war issues. Chance

Here is what I pulled out of 10 rolls of Nickels just in the past 15 minutes. 1941-d, 1946-P, 1948-P&D, 2 1949-P, 1953-D, 1954-P, 2 1959-D, also grabbed these other ones 1982-P, 2000-D PL, 2007-P, 2010 and 2011 P Pl
I did have fun and will probably grab some halves this afternoon if I can.
