I don't know about the rest of you guys, but when I started collecting coins years ago I made the mistake of buying as many coins as possible without regard to their quality. As I became a more knowledgeable I ended up parting with most of my early purchases...

However, I must say, the absolute worst purchase I ever made was a PCI green label PF-70 1953 Cameo Franklin. It was really a PF-67 1953 Franklin without a Cameo designation which I sold at a loss.

I bought an 1884-s Morgan dollar listed as au/bu raw which seemed to be enhanced digitally on e-bay for 1.5 c-notes and took a beating when I got and realized it was xf at best. That hurt. But we all learn from our down falls. I would say mistakes but that didn't seem to fit right.

bought a roll of "old nickels" on ebay. One end was a V nickel, one end was a Shield nickel. The roll was entirely buffaloes except those end coins.

Cleaning a 1893 IHC penny with Comet. I still just shake my head at my stupidity.

Nice topic idea CC99999.

Probably a tie between cleaning a lot of my early finds from circulation and buying one of those Guaranteed $2500 book value mystery lots on ebay for $250. Actual value? About $70.

I bought an 1884-S Morgan dollar listed as CH BU, back in 1990 through a mail order sell Jack H. Beymer (still in business), I remember phoning in the order from the Netherlands on a pay phone (expensive call). I thought that I made the deal of a lifetime! Turned out to be XF at best. I called back voicing my displeasure, the lady on the other end said that all 1884-S Morgans were weakly struck. I still have the coin in a fire resistant box...somewhere in another box from one of my many moves with the military.

Hey Muddler, I did that back in the early 80's. Only did a few but nothing key date. Sure made them look shiny!

Mine was worse, on my first Lincoln cents I used brass polish while they were still in the folder.

I don't know if this was a mistake but I certainly regret it: My first time at the coin club and they had an 1804 Spiked Chin Half Cent for auction. It was listed with something wrong with it (can't remember exactly but it was minor) so I decided not to get it because I didn't want to buy a "damaged" coin. It went for $92. Ever since, I've been trying to find one around the same price but none of them have been as nice as that one. It was actually a really nice coin and I let it slip away. I've been kicking myself ever since.

Since I'm only an 11-month rookie, I'm quite certain I've made worse mistakes. I just haven't realized them all yet.

I'm pretty new to collecting coins so I probably haven't made my worst mistake yet. But give me time - I will.

I'm still sorta new at this. I purchased a bunch of silver coins from an estate. There were many Morgans in that bunch.

I sold 30 of those Morgans at spot silver.

Sigh.

The good news is that I still have many...
