My noobish question is about the useless mechanical or Strike Doubling a lot of people mistake for a double die coin(I wont mention any particular place, like, oh, >>>EBAY<<<!). Is it possible to have this on a letter or number on the coin that goes all the way around the letter or number? Thankyou.

It would be 'machine' doubling - not 'mechanical' doubling...and no, it would not be possible for that to go all the way around any device, but Die Deterioration can.

Doubled dies (note the 'd' at the end of the first word there) will not be on both sides of the devices, so you can immediately rule that out too.

Actually, " Mechanical Doubling" is one of the many synonyms one encounters in the literature. Other synonyms include Strike Doubling, shift doubling, Machine Doubling damage, machine damage doubling, and ejection doubling. It can get confusing.

I randomly selected " Machine Doubling" as my term of choice. I did consciously avoid any term that incorporates the word "damage", since I don't regard such defects as damage. I consider Machine Doubling a minting error. It's hard to claim damage in those cases when clear, separate design elements are generated.

Technically an error by definition, but generally adds no value to a coin unless very extreme in nature.

I would still consider this relatively minor Machine Doubling. Extreme examples show much greater travel. Check out Figure 3 in this article for an example:

These get gobbled up by bidders on auction sites from either undereducated or dishonest sellers all the time. Double Die is being used as a catchall for all of these different forms. I have found alot of these roll searching; heart races for a minute, then then comes the, aww damn, on to the next coin. I have learned volumes from CC forums.
