New to the forum (first post) first and foremost. Wife surprised me today. She stopped by the bank today and scored a handful of SBAs and a few other circulated Presidential coins. I stopped (different bank) on my way home and got nothing. Any advice, other than sending my wife out more often? I just started collecting seriously about 6 months ago and it is pretty addictive.

Well keep to it, Id say to hold on to the SBA's and look through the Presidential dollars and keep the nicer ones. Thats personally what I would do. I am rather new to collecting as well. If you like searching through coins, get a box or two of Jefferson nickels or lincoln cents; really whatever interests you, and go through them with a loupe or magnifying glass and keep the error coins, large and small dates (on lincolns) Note: check forums for what some of these things means in depth. Just go through and build a set of something from circulation. It will keep you busy, teach you what you like and what to look for, and it is lots of fun. You can buy a folder or album to store them in. I recommend Dansco or Whitman albums. Those are just some suggestions if you are just starting out. Here is a website you can use for pricing if you have any questions on that! MS=Mint State, AU=Around Uncirculated, XF=Extra Fine, VF=Very Fine, F=FIne, VG=Very good, G=Good being from highest to lowest grade. Hope this helps! www.numismedia.com

Welcome FRED! Nice haul...I have noticed my local banks always have a few SBA's laying around on their desk change holders, so, I always ask to buy what they have...1 dollar each, hard to go wrong...check your 2007-2012 Dollars for clean, BU coins to keep, & missing edge lettering and double dies(doubleddie.com, wexler's site--go to DOLLARS for pics) I am newly addicted to SBA's, and, am filling a few albums...souvenir sets abound on ebay, as well as mint sets, to fill holes, and, you'll want a 1999 proof for sure... When you have time, you can learn the difference on the TYPE-I & TYPE-II S mintmarks, and, hunt for the TYPE-II 79 & 81...many coin stores are SO busy buying gold and silver, they throw the virtually worthless 70's and 80's mint sets into their boxes, waiting for a rainy day to sort out the TYPE-II's...if you beat them to the punch, you score a sweet coin(79 T-II's I have sold average about 60-75 dollars, and, 81's about 250, but, they are scarce, those 81's)... Keep posting all your finds, and pics! Calvin

Thanks Casutherland and IlikeIkes. I will keep at it. Stopped by two different banks on the way home picked up 4 rolls of dimes, nickels, and pennies. The plan is to go through them on the road. Gotta bunch of crazy looks when I inquired about uncommon currency.

to the Community! Nice finds! Quote: Any advice, other than sending my wife out more often? It depends on your budget, but you may want to find a local coin shop or coin show to visit. Of course, my best advice is to hang around here and learn everything you can.

Welcome to the forum.
I agree with jbuck, find a local coin shop(s) and maybe find out where and when there might be coin shows in your area.
There seems to be different types of collectors. Some are for the fun of it, some are for the possible profit .. and some are a little of both.
The ones for fun will roll/change search to fill sets. Most times these sets will not have much value (over face value), unlless you find some key coins.
A important thing to learn is .. common coins will always be common and rare coins will get more rare.

Thank you all for the welcoming remarks. Found a couple wheat pennies and a nickel from 1940 this morning. I'll post my the oldest coins after the holiday. Thanks again and have a good one.
