Hi everyone,
Does the US mint have specifications on placement of the the mint mark how far from the date it should be? I ask because I have noticed mint marks when I cull bank rolls that are closer or farther from the date. Thank you
Currently when they made a coin die, the mint mark is done with the initial metal work. In the past, the mint marks were added later. This caused the mint marks to be slightly different, including location, doubling, re-punching "D over S", and all the other issues,
On some of the older coins they are really all over the place. Some are so close to the date, they appear as part of the date. Always wondered where those old Mint workers had their lunch?
