1998 Lincoln Has Weird Striations - Coin Community Forum

NomadA32 New Member United States 26 Posts	Posted 11/23/2011 9:24 pm Ok going through some pennies this evening I came across this 1998 Lincoln that has striations in the metal it is on both sides but more pronounced on the obverse side and as you can see the details on the coin are very pronounced as well on both sides. any idea as to what this may be? thanks for the help from anyone. Buddy Rest in Peace United States 7075 Posts	Posted 11/23/2011 10:49 pm I think those are known as 'woodies' because of the woodgrain appearance and it is caused by an improperly mixed alloy. It's a keeper, in my opinion, but I keep all the oddities that I come across. Report this Post to the Staff

The planchet is zinc and plated with copper. On the woodies it is a poor copper mix. Not the case on Zincoln's. Report this Post to the Staff
