I just recently ordered a 2010 proof set and one of my Presidential dollar coins looked messed up. The front had slight color differences as though another metal was stained into it and a part of the reverse rim is missing the gold coating and just shows the dark metal below the surface of the coin. I will post a picture soon but could this be an error coin or just damaged? The coin is still in its original proof set.
Rest in Peace

I'm no expert, but it is hard for me to imagine that the coin had any of the usual kinds of damage seeing as it went directly from the mint to you. I am looking forward to seeing the pictures. I am quite curious about this.

Unfortunately my camera is not working so I had to do a scan. The Franklin Pierce coin is the one with the stained metal like appearance around the ear. It is also the same coin that has missing gold coating from the rim on its bottom left side. While these may not be large spots on the coin this is how I received it.

Just another example of poor qc from the mint. I don't know why anyone buys their products.

So it is just a damaged coin?

Did you order from the Mint or a private seller? I was actually surprised to see all of the 2010 sets still available

The discoloration on the obverse is toning typically seen on proof golden dollars. I have no idea what the dark spots are on the reverse rim but the underlying metal should not be dark. Golden dollar planchets are similar to the CuNi clad coins in that they have manganese brass outer layers with a core of pure copper.

wow -- now I know why serious collectors order so many sets of proofs...so they can pick out the good ones and sell the rest.

I was hoping it was an error ....(sigh)

Rough guess is mild lamination error perhaps..contaminated planchet just not up to par...
I just ordered my 2010 Uncirculated Mint set from the GOV.....I believe the 2010 sets will be finished December 30th.
