I know about the 1988 with a reverse of a 1989, but this seems odd. There's a distinctive serif on the bottom of the G (it's not post-mint damage) and a hint of a serif to the left on the ascending stroke, but the top arc of the G seems to go a bit too far over. I need a second opinion.

I agree that the top goes over two far. As far as the bottom....I'm not sure.

Is the top of the G damaged? The center looks cut. Might account for it being too far east.

It doesn't look damaged; however, I'm going to try and take some better pictures today and get a clearer sense of the shape that I can post here.

Hi, I know this an old topic, but it's still of interest to me and I hope to others. I search about five boxes of pennies a month and the 88/89 FG varieties are definitely on my radar. What I do when I find an 88 or 89, is set it aside then look at them all, reverse first, with my 14x loupe. I determine what year it should be based on the appearance of the initials, then flip it over and see what year it actually is. I haven't found the good one yet, but I have found a handful of what appears me to be an intermediate variety of the 1988 initials. The lower vertical bar of the G seems to be thicker and to be squared off slightly at at the southeast corner compared to the normal 1988 G. The picture in the first post of this thread appears to one of these. I would interested in any comments about my observation. I've had a pretty run of luck in the last couple of months - 1983 DDR several weeks ago and a 2009 Capital reverse missing the copper, nice glossy surfaces so it hasn't been messed with. Got a 1999 Wide AM a couple of years ago. Looking forward to being part of this group. Scott

SKT300: On the OP photo I see damage on the top of the "F" , the center of the top arc and on the vertical bar of the "G". SteveCaruso said he saw no damage so perhaps I am seeing some kind of lighting/optical trick. I think this is not the '89 reverse, any "intermediate variety " could be due to die wear.

That is just a normal(RDV-005) FG for 1988, I wouldn't spend a lot of time over-analyzing these things.

Maineman is absolutely right. The serif on the G is not the only thing to look at. The ENTIRE design is different. Spend some time getting a good feel of the normal 1988 reverse and the normal 1989 reverse and LEARN them inside and out. Recognizing the difference is a LOT easier than focusing in on one tiny point of the design and taking a guess.
