I'm trying to complete the 7070 set of major US coins and I'm struggling to find the ones I need at my local coin stores (I live in Sydney, Australia). So I'm thinking of using ebay to get the majority of the coins I need. However, after hearing some of the ebay horror stories on this site, I'm wondering if anyone could recommend some reliable sellers?

My only suggestion is to stick around here, make lots of posts, ask lots of questions until you get enough posts to buy and sell right here. I too don't trust anything on ebay. I also tend to shy away from most on line dealers since, like ebay, you just don't know. Of course I have numerous coin shows in my area so on line dealings are really not necessary. I like coin shows due to you can see the real coin you are buying. No lost in mail, no insureances, no postage and handling, no "NO returns" and all the other problems with the internet. Dealing with sellers here you would get a lot more honest types of people since most members are on more serious note. Not out to scam people, hopefully.

Yes, there are some ebay horror stories but the availability and variety of coins is incredible. I buy mostly on ebay and research the sellers carefully. There are a lot of great people selling on ebay - and then there's the scammers. This forum is a great resource for researching that kind of information.

I have had quite a bit of success with ebay and fortunately have not had any problems. I am in the U.S. and all of my purchases have been from Canadian or U.S. sellers and have not had any misdeliveries or items lost. When I buy, I try to buy from recommended sellers that have detailed photos. I mostly buy ungraded coins and adjust my bidding accordingly.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm probably going to resume collecting for my set in the New Year so hopefully by that time my post count will be high enough to start buying off this sight. Hopefully I will be able to post up a completed set in the not to distant future.

In the last six months, I've bought over $1000 worth of coins off of ebay for my 7070 album, and have had tremendous success doing so. Never had any problems. I think maybe two or three times I wasn't happy with the coin, and the seller was happy to promptly refund my money once I returned the coin.

I too have had mostly good luck on ebay. At times the picture is not worthy of the coin in hand and in those cases the seller has been happy, if not eager, to return my money. Most ebay dealers are so afraid of getting negative feedback, they'll do anything you ask. However, one time 2 or 3 years ago, I bought a sweet proof barber half from a big outfit (can I say the name?) and they sent me a completely different proof coin that looked liked trash. I got my money back, but still, the nerve of them, like I wouldn't notice the coin was different after spending $550. I'm sure it's not just incidental either, because that same company is still recycling the same gorgeous pictures. And prey tell, how do they have a 100% positive feedback. It looks like ebay is taking kickbacks for high ratings or something.

I've only had one problem buying on ebay and it wasn't the coin but the unethical seller. Make sure there is a clear return policy in place and let them know you are in Australia as returns may take awhile to get them.

As you can see here one of the important factors about ebay is to watch for a NO RETURN policy. And even if you can return a coin, who pays for all the postage? In many instances people pay when buying and again when returning. Few people dealing with ebay purchases mention the cost of things like postage, handling, insurances, etc. Always attempt to add those costs to your purchases.

I've found a lot of great deals on ebay and my experience lately has been mostly good. But I have to admit, I have very specific search criteria that I've developed over 11 years of eBaying and a lot of stuff I don't even bother clicking. In the beginning there were more bad than good. Previous advice is key, get educated, stick around the forums. When you're ready you can even get advice on individual purchases here on CCF.

I personally think that ebay has an excellent marketplace for numismatic items. The only recommendation I have for making ebay purchases is to make sure that the seller has clear, sharp photographs. Most disappointments arise from the buyer simply not being able to see all the nicks, scratches, or other minor distractions because of the poor picture quality. If you're going to buy off ebay, make sure you stick to a nice handful of sellers that put in the effort to take quality photographs. Also, don't get too caught up in all of the "horror stories." There is a plethora of collectors who have had enormous success buying off of ebay. However, those rare "horror stories" seem to linger in our minds much easier than tales of success.

You will not see postings about the thousands of good transactions that occur for every sour one. Unfortunately, it's the bad that we remember the most.
