Hello Everyone!

I have been a member for a while, but I rarely post. I have to sell some of my collection but I am ineligible to buy or sell here because I lack sufficient posts. I have ungraded coins - Morgans, Peace, halves, quarters, dimes, some commemoratives and mint sets, and lots other miscellaneous US and some foreign. Some of my Morgans are high value, and most are in great condition. It's time to sell some and I am uncertain where to sell to get the best return. I have been watching sales on ebay periodically over the past year and it seems that often good coins sell considerably below their apparent value. Does anyone have suggestions about sales venues where I might get the fairest value? There is a local shop that I have been thinking about, in fact the same place where my Dad purchased the majority of the collection many years ago. I have hesitated because I know the vendor must profit on resale - is it best to sell to collectors rather than dealers? Any advice or direction is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

What part of the country are you located in? I'm sure some of us could point you in the right place to contact a reputable dealer for an apraisal. I would recomend this over actually selling or letting them know you want to sell. Get an independent idea for "insurance" purposes only. They would be more apt to give you the true value, of course a dealer would pay only 60%+ as they need to make a profit, but at least you will have an idea of the real value, remember you hold the keys in the deal, it's a sellers market right now. You should expect to pay for at least an hours time depending on the amount of coins to be appraised, probably cost less than $150.00.

Start off by getting a Red Book - most large bookstores carry it, go over what you have, sort out the dreck and low value items, stuff that is fairly common like modern mint sets, proof sets, you can find current real market values on these items with a quick ebay completed items search, the rest you should have an idea of what to look for from either the RedBook or appraisal. Really high dollar stuff over $5k you might want to consider an auction company, look for experience and the ability to market your coins within a good upcoming collection auction or coin show.

Some of the Morgans and other high end or higher value coins may be candidates for a submission to a grading company. I'm sure you'd be more than welcome to contact most of us here (me included) privately with a list of what you have. I helped my uncle in the same spot selling off stuff for one of his wifes realitive, he started out by selling Morgans locally, but was only getting half of what he probably should have been paid (I don't know as I never saw the coins), he shipped me the rest of the Morgans he had, so many CC's and great VAMs, we sold them on ebay properly marked and he made a ton for his brother in law! I only took a small precentage 5% for VAM'ing and photographing/writting the descriptions for him, he already was an accomplished ebay seller.

Good luck and don't jump to quick - until you really know what you have!

A couple things to think about would be:

How much time and effort do you want to put into it? ebay is actually a pretty good venue if you know what you're doing. But selling on ebay takes a lot of time and effort. Good photographs are paramount. You can count on ebay and PayPal taking roughly 12% for their fees.

How fast do you need to liquidate them? If you are strapped for cash and need to sell quickly, I would suggest taking them to a dealer. The upside to this is you get immediate cash and don't have to deal with the headaches of ebay such as fees...photographs...shipping...questions...buyer complaints...and so on. The downside is you won't get what they are worth since the dealer has to make a living. There is a price to be paid for fast cash.

Another idea would be to take them to a coin show. That way you can shop them around to multiple dealers and get several different quotes.

If you're talking about high-end stuff, I would also suggest an auction house such as Heritage or Stacks.

There are couple of ways you can ensure that you sell it at the price you want by listing it on ebay with the price you want to sell it in an auction mode. For listing it in auction mode, you will pay nothing to ebay unless you sell it. That way you can always get the price you want. By selling things on ebay, you would lose 10% of the value as ebay fees.

I would be interested in your foreign coins. Please do send me a PM with what you have :)

Thanks

Hi BrokenCompass,

Thank you for responding! I am an ebay seller (small time), and have been dabbling in the selling end for about 7 years. Part of my issue is my ignorance - my coins have not been graded and my knowledge is growing but still minimal. Not having the discernment to estimate the grade, I don't really know how to price a coin auction in most cases. It looks like a commonly available Morgan in uncirculated or almost uncirculated condition will sell for near or less than spot silver. It gets tricky for me for key dates and rare mints because then the grade is all-important.

If you give me a few days, I will compile a list of the foreign coins - I'm not sure if they are collector grade or rare enough to be of interest, but I will let you know what I have. Thanks Again for your response!

Another idea would be to post some pics on here of coins you are unsure of the grade. We would be happy to give you a grade and estimated value. wouldn't worry about compiling a list to sell to anyone on here, since you don't have the required post count, you could get yourself and others in hot water with the mods.

Hi CWB8539,

Thank you for responding! Part of it is for fast return - circumstances as they are. I think my best move may be to take some of the really pretty but common dates to the local dealer for the fast return for immediate needs and have some of the more rare dates/mints graded before sale. I looked into grading briefly - the tiers and submission limits were frankly confusing. It's more complicated than I had expected, with value limits and such. I didn't get very far and must go back and read through it all again and try to develop a better understanding of the process.
As for ebay, my photo equipment is adequate for most selling, but some of the higher value coins would probably do better with those ultra-close pics that looks like they were taken with a microscope. When I can, I want to buy a reasonable usb digital microscope specifically for coin pics. I'll keep my eyes open for the next coin show near home - maybe take in a "handful" and see how I interact with the pros.
Thanks for your help!

Hi JokingJoker,

I will try posting some pics (must take some) for help grading. I especially don't readily pick up on VAMs and errors that aren't obvious. About making a list - I am not trying to sell to members as I know I am not allowed, and hot water is not something I do not want to try out. I appreciate having a place to ask questions and hopefully make sound decisions. Does mods mean moderators?

Hi Westcoin!

Thank you so much for responding! I live in the Tidewater area of southeast Virginia - right on the coast, military all around. I too was wary of approaching a dealer stating I want to sell. My inexperience could be very expensive. The owner of the shop I have in mind dealt with my father for years, but my Dad passed away almost 25 years ago and I would expect any friendship they had would not necessarily extend to me. Everyone has to earn a living.
I have the 2010 Red Book and it has been my primary resource for information. I would like to get the VAM reference, but it is not possible right now. I probably don't have anything in the $5k range, with the exception of one rare CC which may be about half of that or a little more. You are on the dot with don't jump too quickly. Besides the financial loss, it would be disrespectful to my father to do anything less than my best. I will PM.

Thank you!

Newnumi I see that one cannot PM on this board. I didn't know that either, I'm kind of new here too! For the VAM's try the http://www.vamworld.com reference site, it has close up photos and instructions on how to look for pick up area on the coins you have, very easy to use site, from wiki.

Maybe go to the dealer your Dad used, and tell him at this point you are just wanting an appraisal so you have enough insurance coverage.

Several of the members here reside in Tidewater. If you click on my name and go to the send a message area I can point you to several reliable dealers for appraisals in this region. Take your time if able and good luck. nlp

You can PM(actually email) on this forum if you meet post requirements & have enabled email on your user control panel.

In my opinion most coins sell for their true market value on ebay. That doesn't mean you will get what a price guide says a coin is worth, or what a retail store might be asking. That's assuming you have clear, detailed pictures of the obverse & reverse of the coin, & enough positive feedback to generate trust from the buyers. However, ebay is probably not the appropriate venue for rarer or more high end coins.

Not really. There are some high grade high end pieces that are doing well and Morgans happen to be okay, but for the most part, it's a buyer's market right now. Dealers, especially those in brick and mortar, can't give some of their inventory away right now. The few dealers I know aren't even buying most coins worth less than $100 unless the sale is ridiculous because they can't move them right now.

I think the best, and worst, way for you to sell your coins would be on ebay. You might be looking up retail values and seeing that the coins aren't realizing those prices. That would happen anywhere and is also due to the aforementioned issue of what I believe it to be a buyer's market. ebay is best because, out side of personally finding an individual collector to purchase your coins, it would likely get you the best value.

For why I think ebay is worst, just see this thread
http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...LY_ID=875234

On a side note, the really valuable pieces you have should be slabbed. The cost of TPG certification will be worth the increase in prices realized regardless of who to or where you sell.

Ok here is one of the best I feel is the best place to judge your coins against for grading. Now for the ms-60 and above it gets really tricky with what small details that make them higher grades.

I hope it opens for you.

Good luck!
