I recently inherited a small cache of coins. I would hesitate to even call it a collection, but it was enough reignite my interest in coin collecting - a hobby I enjoyed as a youngster. One of the items I received is a mostly empty Dansco 7070 US type album. I've read that older versions of these albums used PVC and are not safe for long-term storage, but I don't know when the switch was made or when my particular album was made. As the final page is for bicentennial coins, and there is no spot for a zinc Lincoln Cent, I assume it was made in the late 70s/early 80s, though perhaps it was made later and the zinc cent didn't warrant changing the design? So, is this album okay or should I buy a newer one?

From your description, my Dansco 7070 sounds the same as yours - does your final page also have a slot for a Susan B. Anthony dollar? Anyway, assuming that mine and yours are of a similar pedigree, I originally purchased mine (used) in the mid-1990s. Although it is not full, I've had several proof coins in the appropriate slots for well over a decade along with circulated examples of a number of other denominations, and I've had no problems.

Oh, and to the forums!

I think you are safe keeping that 7070.

I do not think Dansco has ever used PVC. As long as I have been using them, the pages and plastic slides have been completely safe for coins. My oldest Dansco albums are 27 years old now. My Dansco 7070 album is 18 years old. No problems, no complaints.

There have been albums with PVC problems; the Harco brand is a good example.

If your final page only has the Bicentennial coins, you can replace it. I had to replace mine to get holes for the Commemorative Dollar, ASE, Statehood Quarter, and Sacagawea dollar (my original page had Bicentennial and the SBA).

I bought mine from Wizard Coin Supply...
