Kneeling is a founder of the university Charles IV. Czech (Bohemian) King and Roman Emperor, standing is St. Wenceslaus, patron of the country. Maybe you can know him from here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5E8...ture=relatedPS When you get sick of my comments, please let me know.

Hi - I've never "cleaned" any coin other than some ancients - so I think I'll pass on that - thanks. I prefer them as untouched as I can get. Not sure which 1948 coin you mean though. Todays .... Not much to comment, Klement Goottwald was the first communists president, syphilitic, alcoholic and murderer. In 2005 he was voted the Worst Czech in a Czech Television poll.

Really beautiful coins, Bacchus2. I have just a few Czech coins, but nothing to compare to these. Thanks for showing them. Steve

He was a leader I didn't know much about - and yes - not the nicest of people. I have coins of Nero, Caligula, some of the Kahns of the Golden Horde, (Japanese puppet states in WWII, etc, etc, - so I think it would be difficult to limit a collection to just depicting "nice people". Maybe the people who rise to those sorts of positions of power aren't nice by definition. Possibly best to get the rulers of questionable morality out of the way on the one day then Date 1949 Size (mm) 31 Weight (g) 14 Silver 0.5000 Tariff 100 Korun Ob. Leg. REPUBLIKA CESKOSLOVENSKA Ob. Desc. Lion (rampant) shield within Rev. Leg. J.V. STALIN 21 XII 1949 References; Krause 30; Novotny 49 I know this is one of the few contempory coins showing Stalin, but not much more than that. I assume the regime at the time was quite eastern leaning in it's outlook.

I understand, but if you don't get that green crap off it, it will eat into the metal and ruin the surface. Don't think of it as cleaning, but preservation, like stopping rust.

The green stuff of the coin comes from the PCV plastic envelope used to store the coin. Acetone will remove it, it's the only way ... on the long run this stuff will eat your coin, beggfredd is right. Check that out : http://coins.about.com/od/caringfor...mage_faq.htm

And just noticed the "presevation" tips. Now that you mention it - it is slightly greenish. I don't keep any of these in plastic - they are in a cabinet - but I suspect it was in plastic before I got it. I'll maybe give it a go. I'm not sure where to get acetone though - maybe the chemist? It's not that expensive a coin so maybe I will do as you suggest. Thanks for nagging me

Acetone doesn't harm coin at all but don't buy it in paint shop, get a pure one from chemist.

100% acetone is available at a paint store, or a pharmacy/chemist. It's generally available in smaller quantities at the chemist, cheaper at the paint store. DO NOT use nail polish remover, which is mostly acetone, but contains softeners and other additives.
