Was not a fan of American 90% silver until this thread Ed... you've passed the bug on!

I was guessing total stash by the way, and not just the picture of the new items, and I was off 27 oz. eh not bad guess...

That was what I understood your guess to mean, Hawk. I mean, nobody fools The Hawk when it comes to silver. You can spot silver a mile off with those great bird of prey eyes of yours!

Can't go wrong with an American proof eagle quarter oz. coin...

I probably would not get proof gold coins unless they were cheaper than the BUs. This probably isn't all that likely, so it will be BUs for me.

I really like the 1/4 oz. gold coins. They seem like a really good size to me. Not too big but still worth a good amount. Would not be using these as barter items. Might use them to buy something BIG at some point. Most likely would have them as anti-inflation medicine.

Lastly Ed, to say any of my posts inspired you to get into silver, that is a major compliment as far as I am concerned and I appreciate it greatly...

You're most welcome, Hawk. I appreciate your comments as well. I hope that I have gained a little wisdom along the path of life. This is not come by easily in most cases. We pay for it with the bumps, scrapes, and bruises that come along as we learn what NOT to do!

I have a feeling you would have found your way to the pm's without ever reading any of my dribble

Perhaps so but sooner IS better than later and if you saved me some time then that is pretty worthwhile too. Thanks, man!

BU 90% is the best IMO. I love my 999 but man there is nothing like BU Washingtons and Roosies.

They have some nice features that make them a good place to start collecting silver bullion. I like the fact that they are small in silver content, so would be great for those small purchases where you might not get change. They are easily recognized for what they are and they are not really worth counterfeiting. The proof versions are sometimes available for less than the circulated versions. This was the case for the Statehood Quarters and the Kennedy halves that I got. They look terrific and cost less. Hard to beat that combo in any collection.

Sweet! Glad to hear it. I can use the company in this.

Where do you find the proof ones for less than their circulating brothers? I usually see a small premium attached to the proof ones, unless they are ugly.

Well, I can definitely say that you have inspired me, Ed!

Over a period of a few weeks (whenever silver dipped back down to $30-31), I purchased the following from APMEX:

In addition, I bought the following off ebay during the same period:
  • One roll of BU Franklin half Dollars

  • One roll of BU Roosevelt Dimes

  • One roll of "junk" Mercury Dimes

I justified the purchases (partially to myself, but mostly to my wife) as bullion to be stashed away for investment and/or emergency purposes, but in reality I just wanted to get some rolls of incredibly nice looking coins. The reality is that if I just wanted to buy for investment/emergency, I'd be better off buying bags of junk silver. I just can't get past how great the BU and proof silver coins look, though...

Any silver is good to have but it makes the cost easier if they are beautiful coins too! All PMs are a safety net!

Excellent job, Barry!

Your collection seems to be heavier in half dollars than is mine but that's probably a good thing.

A 90% silver half dollar is a sweet coin with a useful amount of silver in it. I like the half dollars quite a lot.

I don't have any Franklins yet but would like to get some.

I really like the Kennedy half dollars. The eagle on the reverse is really great looking, IMO.

The AU Walking Liberty halves are superb coins. I don't have any of that grade but do have a couple of rolls of the F/XF grade, many of which are really outstanding in appearance.

And that doesn't even include the Morgan dollars, Peace dollars and rolls of 40% silver bicentennial coinage I own...

Well done Barry Q, you have been doing your homework and added some great sought after silver 90% items there as I am impressed with that list of additions....

Actually, Barry Q is my evil clone, but thank you anyway...

The next time silver drops, I'm thinking of picking up some more BU Morgans at APMEX. I started my hoard buying some on ebay and later discovered I could actually get them much cheaper at APMEX. The only problem now is finding a place to put them as they take up more space than dimes, quarters and halves and my little safe is getting awfully full...

Well 100 face is roughly 71.5 troy oz of pure silver so that plus w/e Eddy got in the statehoods. Overall a nice chunk.

I also wish I had more dimes for a SHTF situation. most of the 90% is either half dollars or quarters and in a true SHTF 90% dimes and even War Nickels will be the best bet.

But also in a SHTF situation I will undoubtedly start producing some sort of good be it moonshine, or crops or a trader of some wears that most need. So I can always get more silver with my goods :).

Yes many of us have found true PM collecting due to the terrible times we are living in. Stocking up opn food supplies and PM. That may all work fine if everyone does so. My fears are about the chaos that could happen. It could be dangerous to let anyone know you have anything or use or trade whatever. Then some might conclude you have more. Terrible times if it ever happens

BTW, here is a picture of my current hoard:

Latest-Addition-To-My-Silver-Hoard

Not much compared to what many have, and probably not enough to make much of a difference in a SHTF situation, but it's a start...

[Actually, in a true SHTF situation I'd be really bummed since I paid a premium to get most of these coins in AU and BU condition, which wouldn't matter if I had to use spend them purely as silver bullion. Still nice to have them, though.]

That's true about bad times. But probably silver will be very valuable and the premium you paid will be of insignificant amount. We just have to hope and pray things don't unravel to have to see
