Probably a silly question but are all 1856's large letter variety?
Rest in Peace

The 56 was one of several years of patterns. There's prolly a whole mess of research you could do on them.

Amida,
Yes--all 1856-7 obverses are the LL type. Additionally, the 1856 obverse legends had a different lettering style. Here is a post that describes the differences between the 1856 and 1857 obverse styles. Note: if you see an "1856" Flying Eagle with small letters obverse, it must be a fake, doctored coin.

Thanks DV. That is what I was thinking. I was shown an "1856" at a show and I questioned the small lettering. The guy new it was an altered date but could not answer my question.

But don't trust MS or PF designations or variety designations especially from PCGS. They caught so much grief for getting them wrong so often that now they no longer do the varieties and they call all 1856 FE cents Proof whether they are or not. They can tell if they real or not, they just don't know what is exactly.
