Hello,

My name is Jason, I am new around here. I found this fourm after going into a bank about 3 weeks ago, and seeing a roll of half dollars lying on the counter. I bought them and came home with them.

I have since went to every bank and gotten 2 Ike dollars and a roll of presidental dollars.

I am not really looking for anything special. I just like larger denomination coins. At first I was just using this as a way of saving money :), but have found myself looking at websites about coins more and more often over the past bit.

How hard is it to find Ike dollars (not silver, or special, just the dollars) at banks (or face vaule anywhere). I am not really trying to pay more than face value for coins at this point. I guess I am just getting my feet wet.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks!

Rest in Peace

Ex_Mi, First of all Welcome to Coin Community.

About finding Eisenhower dollars for face at the bank, from my
experience a lot of it depends on just sheer luck.
Some guys on here have in the past been able to find them by the bag, Others such as
myself have a very hard time finding them. My personal situation is
I think that I have some one else or a few someone else's that are also
looking for them in my town. Many many times when I have asked for Ike's
the teller says to me " We just had some but someone bought them"
If the time comes that you become interested in collecting them
and paying more than face value. Most coin shops have large amounts
of them that are usually kept bucket or large cups that they sell
for a little bit over face value. normally between $1.25 and $1.75
depending on the shop.I have spent more than a few afternoons
sitting in a coin shop going through a bucket of Ike's and picking
out some very nice higher grade ones and some of the rarer varieties.
Such as the 1972 P with a Type 2 Reverse and the
1971 D FEV (Friendly Eagle Variety)
I hope this helps
Enjoy the hunt It is a blast

As posted they are out there .. just have to be lucky.

I work in a coin shop, and see them come in often.
Sometimes I pick them up if I am helping someone out
with putting a set together.

Then spend them them or take them to the bank.

So I know they are out there.

Yes they are out there. A couple of years ago I saw an AU 1972 Type 2 Ike in a roll of Ikes at my local Wells Fargo. I don't collect AU moderns so I sold it over Craigslist and got about $100 for it. So you can get lucky and find some nice treasures if you only look!

Just keep on asking at the banks. Let them get to know you so they MAY, or may not, look out for them for you. I know at one bank they constantly look for halves for me. Just keep on asking.

You also might search this site (using the search function) and put in key words...Like "Ike" or Half Dollar" and just read what other people have found and overall discussion about certain coins. That has helped me learn alot. There is a plethora of knowledge on this site.

I have kept every old coin that came my way for over 40 years. I have only been learning about coins for the past year. I have bought a few but I get most of my finds from other people. I have everybody in my family save their change for me. Last month I found a 1940 Wheat cent in my sister's change.

So you can ask your family members to hang onto their change for you. You can pay them face value and take it home and search it. Also try garage sales. Sometimes people have old milk bottles and jars full of pennies and quarters. I know that you prefer halves and dollar coins but you never know what might be in an old jar of coins. Besides you can always take what you don't keep to the bank for a roll of halves.

"Oh, and don't clean your coins."

So does this mean like, don't soak your coins in soapy water to get dirt and whatnot off. Or like chemical cleaning or using a brush or something?

Jason,
All of the above is seriously bad for coins.
Coin cleaning is a very interesting topic on forums
Back in the old days it was common practice to clean coins
and today when collectors see those coins they can still
tell that they have been cleaned dropping the coins value dramatically when looking through their
magnifiers. And it can even be seen that there was and old cleaning
and the coin started to re-tone.
The only universally accepted way I know of to remove some debris
and PVC contamination from coins is using 100% Pure Acetone which is
finger nail polish with out the perfumes in it. available at Walmart
and most drug stores in large container fore very little money. It is an inert compound and will have no affect on
surface of the coin itself

And I am one of those that has no problem with a properly dipped coin. Yes, they can be over dipped, but that would then not be properly done. But as a beginner, not the best thing to do on nice coins. Practice on common junk spender type coins. And all of that is further down the road. Right now just enjoy finding the coins you like at the banks. nothing better than finding cool coins at face.
