I just feel what we are going through now is nothing compared to the great depression or WWII. I think a lot of people want things to be bad- worse than they are. To predict billion prices will stay high or go higher is to also believe that the entire world economy will erode or dip into another recession. I feel sorry for those who have such little faith - that little optimism. Perhaps they are sad people.

I recently heard a dealer at a coin shop trying to convince a potential buyer that "one day we will be buying our gas with 90% silver coins." What a ridiculous thing to say. Again, fear driven speculation and sad people.

As for the original topic, gold being valued higher that platinum. I stick by me beliefs. It proves gold is over priced. Only a fool would buy an ounce of gold over an ounce of platinum anyway. Everyone knows platinum is much scarcer. I also believe in true coin collecting and not bullion buying. I'd rather have quality numismatic coins over bullion any day of the week. I'm happy to have sold off my bullion at these inflated prices. I moved that money into a heck of a great coin collection. Enjoy your bullion boys. I'll enjoy my numismatic coins.

Yes, and you do know this is COIN Community Forum, right? I stick to my original statement. Gold and silver are over priced due to fear and speculation. We all have a right to our own opinions. Have a good evening.

last time i'll ask because I really am still curious, any facts to back up your original statement?

A lot of comments drawn from anecdotal opinions, and that's fine to share. But, when using words like "ridiculous" and "only a fool.." against a point you are arguing, baseless opinions becomes, well, a tad tasteless (IMO)

People take things too personally these days. If anyone has an alternative opinion they want to cry their hearts out. Keep in mind you don't have to read further if you are too sensitive.

I know all of these "new collectors" are licking their lips in anticipation of $100 silver and $3000 gold. Yes, these are more ridiculous and foolish beliefs in my opinion. The good news is that it will not happen. And yes, we all have the right to our own opinion. Besides, what proof does anyone here have that bullion is going to stay high? None!

It's clear that some find a bullion bubble bust difficult to fathom so I'll give you something more to ponder. I think the results of the 2012 election will help determine how fast bullion will fall. If Obama is elected again bullion will probably stay over priced for much of 2013 then will rests around $900 gold and $20-25 silver by years end. If a Republican wins, however, I look for bullion prices to fall much faster than that! Why? Because they will open more oil drilling, natural gas drilling, etc. Falling commodity prices, including more oil, will being down other commodities like gold and silver. I'm sticking to this statement too.

I will say I am enjoying this discussion. That is what CCF is for, right? Have a good evening.

You can be a true coin collector all you want, but I am willing to bet it does little good paying the bills these days compared to gold or silver bullion, depending on the rarity on metal content and condition. And yeah it will go back down eventually, and start the upswing cycle all over again perhaps, as this life is nothing more then repeating cycles....

I may have a nice collection of polished dino dung that is as rare as they come being fossilized an all. But if no one else sees the value in it and is willing to pay what you are for it, well it only has value to you, which does not mean much in the bigger picture of things.....

Dino dung goes for about 150 to 200 by the way, so 65 million years is a long time to wait to turn that small of a profit....

I am not knocking the numismatic coin game it is a cool hobby IMO. Heck, I believe in anything if there is enough collectors out there to make a market for what ever, and no doubt there is for numismatic coins, and again knowing the game an what to buy I am sure can be just as profitable if not more than gold or silver bullion. Like show me a coin in nice condition that is 2000 years old, at least to the point of still being able to read the markings, as it does not take a rocket scientist to know that is a special thing, esp if it has a tyrant scum bag like Nero or Caligula on it for example, lol.....

You have polished Dino Dung? Can you post scans? Just kidding. I've never looked at my coin hobby as a way to pay the bills. It's a hobby not a business. At least that's how I feel about my collection. I can see where others will use the bullion boom to make a buck. I have no problem with that. I've cashed in myself because I also believe in buy low and sell high. Not buy high sell high. I was buying silver when it was $6 and oz and gold when it was $270 an oz. Those were the good old days but they too are gone for good. Where I'm different from many here is I made the decision that I wanted to be a coin collector not a bullion hoarder. So, over the last couple of years I have sold off bullion and put that money into coins that will always do well- BU Carson City dollars, ect. I'd rather have real coins.
I respect the opinions of others here and had no intention of making anyone feel otherwise. You may disagree with my views but at least I stick to them. There once was a time in America when that was worth something. Unfortunately today's political climate doesn't allow for it. Stick to your beliefs boys. That's what I always do.

where's the fun in that :)
My old psychology prof used to say that believe and faith is source of all conflict, and would enjoy tearing the belief systems of his students down with cold hard facts. I wouldn't go as far as that, but the academics' view right in that every new piece of information you gather and knowledge you acquire should make you turn around and question and test your point of view. "Learn and relearn until you die" a Chinese saying goes.
I just bought my first substantial numismatic item yesterday, a variation of a Canadian silver dollar from the 40s. Anxious to get have it in hand to show a coin buff down at the market, after I visit my local bullion dealer to see if the fractional gold maple leafs and pandas he promised has come in.

With the price of Pt hovering around $1425 or so, it is difficult for me to pay that high a premium. I keep thinking that is 8-9 oz. of extra silver.

If I were to buy physical Pt right now, it would definitely be as bars. The PAMP bars are really nice looking.

I tell you what, I look for platinum 1 10th oz. proofs every once in a while on ebay, and the cheapest I could find one lately was 222 bucks free shipping. That does not reflect the current market price at all....

If I was gonna invest in something beautiful and new that starts with a P, why not this beauty here below at 699 and free shipping....

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pamp-Suisse...em20c0815d1f

My point, is it looks like the better deals can be found in Palladium bars right now....

Would not take a massive investment to store away 2 to 5 oz. of this stuff for example, and who knows one day like any metal inf one is in no hurry to cash in on a quick turn.....
