Found this roll searching and can't find a previously listed rpm for 1976 D that looks like this one on the usual lincoln resource sites. Rotated rpm? Or is this PMD? Sure looks good for a new rpm but I'm humble and willing to ask. Opinions?

Jim

I tend to agree with John1. It appears that the vertical bar portion of the D was displaced to the right from a hit of some sort. You can see somewhat of a void where it started out being. How it stayed attached is another matter? Most probably PMD at any rate.

I am not sure I understand, what does it mean it took a hit. It looks like two D across one another.

If this were two D mintmarks crossing one another the profile of the entire mess wouldn't be in the perfect shape of ONE mintmark. Overlap two letters and the outline of the two together would look very unlike a single letter.

A lot of times coins take hits from other coins and assorted objects in JUST the right spot to make them look very odd. This just happens to be one of those cases. Something hit the lower part of the mintmark cross-ways and dented it - hard - and gave it the appearance it has.

Thanks again everyone!

Chuck and CS, thanks for the explanation as to causation and probable methodology giving the result we see. Having the understanding of how events occur is very helpful and aids in seeing the suspect coin in a totally new light.

wz - what they're saying and I agree is something struck (the coin took a hit) this coin right near the bottom left of the vertical bar of the mint mark causing it to shift/move right. The vertical bar became repositioned to where we see it now giving it the current appearance.
