My eyes are tired but can someone confirm this is MD on the reverse 'ONE' and "UNITED" before I throw it back into the pot?

Actually looks more like Die Deterioration to me, especially how thin the letters are getting.

Not a vote here, just stating a fact.

The other three posts are correct. It is classic Die Deterioration. I would venture to guess this is a cent from 1982-1990. That's roughly the time period where this sort of Die Deterioration happened most frequently.

I think this is right if not then someone please correct me.

If both marks are not on the same level then its not a double die.

The above coin is what all Die Deterioration looks like.
Machine Doubling looks more like steps.

Thanks all, I was pretty sure it was not a DDR but had not considered Die Deterioration.

Your correct Chuck, its a 1988.
