I won an auction last week for a NGC 1952-S Roosevelt dime MS66 last week. The coin arrived today and it looks fantastic. The only problem is that it is a 1953-S Dime inside a 1952-S slab. I only paid about $10 for it so I will probably just keep it and look for another 1952-S Dime.

I do not hold the seller at fault because I am sure he just trusted the label like many would do. I'm not planning on contacting NGC about this because the value of the coin is so little; however, what would NGC do about this if there was more at stake? For example, if I had purchased a 1932-D Quarter MS65, but the coin inside the slab was a 1932 (P).

In NGC's defense, I think they nailed the grade on my dime:)

I don't know what NGC would do but I had a similar thing happen. I bought a slabbed 1909 LWC and when I got it delivered I noticed it was a VDB. Too bad it wasn't an S.

Go to their website, I believe they have a disclaimer about typos.

I have seen slabbing errors sell for pretty decent money. I feel certain you could get more than $10 for it. --- Now I have to go check ebay to see if there are any for sale now....

Okay, I just checked and there don't seem to be any for sale today. But I have seen them -- 'rare slabbing error'. Some people like to buy stuff with errors. Just make sure -- if you decide to sell it -- that you say the error appears on the label and is not some dispute about the grade of the coin.

It is state on their website that their guarantee does not apply to clerical errors. So in the case that you mention with the 1932-D quarter, you would probably be out the money if you are unable to get the seller to agree to a refund.

Correct their guarantees would not cover the 32 in a 32-D labeled slab. But they would happily reholder it for you as a 32 Philadelphia for free. (With you still paying the postage and insurance both ways.)

I guess mistakes get made from time to time. Peculiar that the original submitter or didn't send it back.
