Hi All, I am a coin collector, but normally collect US coins. I picked up some decent looking halves at an auction. I know that the 1948's and the 1947 straight 7 with ML are fairly rare and collectible. I am hoping some of you with more experience might give me some insight as to what these coins might grade. I am thinking about sending them to PCGS to make it official. Thanks a bunch! Schultz24       Edited by schultz24

Hello and welcome!
The photos need to be large and preferably without the plastic between the camera lens and the coins. Personally I have poor visual acuity and without great pics it's a tough go.
based on what I can see, they appear VF 30 range in grade with directional scratches indicative of a rough handling/cleaning. But I'm also willing to say, I can't see them well enough to say for sure.
If you are having a hard time sizing things to manage here on the forums, use a third part free hosting service like Photobucket and just give us links to the coins in questions.
Again welcome and others will be along shortly.

Thanks, I used the optimizer, but that is what I came up with. If I get a chance I will try to take some better pics without the plastic between. More thoughts about possible grades?

Hi, Pics have to be larger, also just show each coin with obverse and reverse photos, you have 2 coins, right?

I will try to make the pics larger, There are actually 3 coins. 1 - 1947 straight 7 maple leaf, and 2 - 1948's. The obverse and reverses should be in order for each coin. thanks

Hello again all, I optimized the photos so they should be better except for the fact that I didn't take them out of the holders to get better pics. Please just give me your best guesses on the grades based on what you see. In person they appear to have a bit of luster left (I don't think they were cleaned with a cleaning agent), I think they are just worn from circulation. Also, on the first obverse, I think the vertical line you see on the face is either a hair or something in the pic, I don't believe that is actually on the coin. Thanks again, I really learn a lot from the site!

I think they'd all make VF, the first has excessive hairlines imo. 25 , 30, 25 are the numerical grades imo.
Great job reworking the photos.

Maybe the coins look better in hand, but I don't think 1947 and 1948 were subject to the weak strikes that other George VI coins were. The top coin is F-15, possibly weakly struck, look at the wear of the eyebrow and the lines in the King's hair and on the reverse, the legs and arms of lion and unicorn (compare these to the bottom reverse image). F-12 for the middle coin and this coin looks like it has been cleaned, there are a lot of parallel arcuate marks. The last coin is VF-20, if the lustre is better in the hand than what I see in the image. They all look genuine, but not worth getting certified by a TPG. Thanks to everyone who gave their opinion on the grades. They sure do look better than that in person based on slabbed coins that I have seen in ebay and other listings. Anyone else care to offer their grades, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks again. |

1947 ML is Fine next Fine last VF 20. All look genuine dont waste the grading fees. Cheers next step upgrades good luck!
