I bought a few of these and some Morgan/Peace dollars from a guy who told me his father was a jeweler and who had made various old coins into jewelry. I bought everything well below melt so I know I can't do too bad off of them - may just sell for a little profit to someone else hoarding silver.

Anyway here is a picture of one of them (I have 3). On the back there is damage from where it was placed on a saddle I believe. I know these are rare and worth a fair chunk in good shape. Does the damage mean it is just worth melt?

Is this something I should sell on ebay with full disclosure? Will I do better than melt that way? Thanks!

I have seen many of the 1926 Oregon Trail halves made concave with a screw attachment such as yours. I even have a belt with four of them on it. They have sold on ebay for a little over $30 but that was with the screw attachment.

knowing nothing about the value of this damaged coin if all they are worth is melt then I would take one off your hands simply because they are cool as heck!
I think depending on who you are selling this coin to would determine the value. Many people wouldn't even look twice at the coin because of the damage.
Kind of on a similar note I picked up a 1931 D Mercury dime for 3 bucks yesterday at a coin show I would grade somewhere in the VG range. It had 2 scratches on the obverse though. Would've been worth a little more but the scratches made it so this guy had the coin in his binder for a while trying to sell it. A lot depends on the buyer I guess.

Googoo, eye appeal is a must for a coin buyer!

As for the half, not too sure...

Melt is what, about $11.25 right now? My guess is you would get 3x-4x melt for those on ebay, so yes, you'll do way better than melt going that route. For me, full disclosure, as in pictures and a mention of the damage in the text description is just the right way to do things. Good luck.

I could use one of those for the commemorative halves section of my 7070.

Sounds like you made a good score (and if you want to make a buck or 2 email me)

This would also be a good coin to give to a young, novice collector. Give it to him or her then ask to see it six months down the road. If they still have it you may just have a future coin collector. Kids today are different and the days of someone inheriting a collection without any prior knowledge of the hobby should be limited. Sure, that's how many of us got into the hobby. Again, today's kids are different and these are hard times. I know a guy who gave a huge portion of his collection to his kids when they were older. He wanted to collect with his kids. Those coins were sold off before he could say Carson City Silver Dollar. Not a good idea from him. Anyway, give this coin to a new collector and see what happens.

Agreed that despite the damage and obvious mis-treatment this coin has seen ... facts are that current popular demand for the Oregon Trail half dollar is such that this coin can most likely sell well above melt value.

I would pay 4X melt in a heartbeat. Its a beautiful coin regardless and being able to own any specimen of the oregon for more than half price sounds like a deal to me

I am a little nervous this coin may be a coin concho because of the damage location. It is the same size as a half, has a good weight to it, isn't obviously curved, and has the right "feel" to me.

However I am a total newbie and am a little nervous I got played.

I think an honest listing on ebay with good photos would get you about $40 for this coin.
