This is my first commemorative - I've liked this design for a long time but haven't ever found one in the right price/condition. I picked this one up at the local dealer today. I'm uncertain about grading these - does anyone have an opinion about the grade. What would something in this condition usually sell for? Thanks for looking and sorry about the photos.

NOTE: Sorry if this isn't in the correct section - I couldn't decide whether to put it here or the grading forum.

to the wonderful world of commemorative patrick!

Agreed this is a great coin ... the first ever USA commemorative half dollar and hopefully a great starter coin for your commemorative set.

My opinion ... your 1893 Columbian Half Dollar grades XF45 based on what I can see in the photos ... it appears to have original surfaces ... and exhibits the natural toning that appeals to many collectors.

You should find many examples like this in the $18 to $30 price range ... definitely above melt value ... but not premium priced.

Nice coin ... Thanks for sharing.

I have one, too! I agree with you...these coins have a certain appeal to them. The local coin dealer decided to sell me one for spot that had been graded ms-62. I helped him attribute his stock of Roman coins (about 50) and he gave me 5 of them in addition to the discount on the Columbian for my 'troubles'. I did not mind; I enjoy attributing Romans. 'Twas a win-win for me.

Thanks for the comments guys and grade! When you're grading these, what do you look for in terms of wear for grade. Details in hair and sails maybe? I've been looking for a grading guide for commemoratives but haven't had any luck finding one yet. Any suggestions?
