Looks like the Mint is expanding and getting ambitious with their product offerings this year, just like what happened in the first half of 2008. I was reading on another blog, a summary of the Mint's annual fiscal report and ran across these two eye-opening items:

Quote:
The US Mint is evaluating the optimum way to bring back American Platinum Eagle bullion coins in 2012. The bullion versions of the coin have not been minted or issued since 2008.

The US Mint plans to offer a 2012-S Uncirculated Silver Eagle. This will be in addition to the collectible uncirculated version with the "W" mint mark.

If they do release the 2012-S collector ASE, wonder how that would impact the value of the 2011-S from the 25th anniversary set?

Good to see there are plans to revive the Pt coins, hope this means the proof versions will return in the fractional sizes. This is in addition to the Pd AE that is supposed to be released this year. All this really means is that 2012 is gonna be one heckuva expensive year just like 2011 was...

Regarding the S...it will depend on how many are minted and my guess is that they will shoot for around 400-450k of each (W & S).

I also like the idea of a repeat of the Dollar coin set with one each of the Pres. dollars, a W and an S all packaged together.

I think the S as a collectable series has great potential and the 2011 S is set up perfectly to be the key of that series.

A continuing burnished-"S" ASE series will only raise interest level in (and the value of) the "key" 2011-S.

I was afraid the Mint would offer the 2011-S as a standalone issue after the A25 Set's release.
Since they didn't, its status as key is secure.

The 2011-S Silver Eagle is a 100K mintage coin no matter what the Mint does going forward. It's place as a key coin in the series is secure.

A little OT, but I'm not liking the "buy silver " campaign by the federal institutions . I definatlwy don't want to do anything they want me to do. Copper pennies are a winner. I've been watching kitco and the likes for past year or so and it keeps changing. Gold , and silver this or that, buy, sell , not looking good , wars etc . If I had money Id be rich because its so easy to see the corrections. When to. Buy, when to sell . Same with gold or copper .and its funny because when its high or going up , everybody buys or wants it, well that's the worst time to buy . You want it when it goes down. But when it goes down everybody panics and sells. And the news will even support that saying its bad investment or war is bad etc. Then miraculously a month layer its a great investment. That's when they want you to buy , because they are selling it while its high or going high , creating even higher out of demand. Just be careful

I'm not an expert. All I do is watch the market , its easy to see when to buy . And what the news says , mostly just do the opposite lol
With all the demand today and all these special edition eagles etc , just be careful. I'm a little hesitant when the fed is selling something like anniversary mint sets when prices are high etc.
