I picked up a couple of uncirculated 2002 Silver American Eagles off ebay last week for $34 each (free shipping). They arrived today and each is encased in a plastic "blister pack" with an card full of spiffy information about the coin enclosed. The card is marked "Littleton Coin Company," which I understand to be a mail order catalog place for ordering coins.

Anyway, my first thought was to cut the coins out of the blister packs and stick them in with the rest of my Silver Eagles, since I'm guessing the sealed blister pack and info card really don't add any value to what is essentially straight bullion. But then I figured I'd better check with you folks on the off chance that these somehow make the coins more "collectible" and therefore worth more than melt value.

Thanks!

Littleton sells millions of these at a high markup. There will never be value in extraneous fluff from them.

That's what I figured, thanks. I've never ordered anything from them or seen anything from them before, so I just wanted to double-check.

I actually thought that the Littleton packaging might actually DECREASE their value, because their stuff is so overpriced and many coins are cleaned, etc.

I agree with mycrob. Many of Littleton's coins are cleaned. Not bad for $34 bucks though! Now we just have to wait for silver to rebound....

I've always felt they left an -o and a couple of spaces out of their name.

ie "little to no" extra value.

OUCH!

Then it's not "littleton one" (little to none)?

They can't be that bad...(hiding Littleton packaged coins from many years ago)

They are a boilerplate operation, making large purchases, putting them in plastic with a little blurb about the coin, and sell it. They over-hype common stuff and as a rule their products deliver no added value above the coins themselves, which are usually common and (apparently from the comments above) sometimes cleaned.

I don't think they're "bad" necessarily, I've got a few pieces of littleton items in my collection too---but the old saying buy the coin not the holder is as true for them as anywhere.

If I saw a coin in a Littleton Flip/package, first I would wonder how bad the original purcheser was ripped off, then I would rip off the packaging.

Littleton Co. is involved with "sending coins on approval," that is, sending coins out before payment. hoping customers will pay for them later. Over the years I have seen their ads in magazines and in the coupon section of the Sunday newspaper offering some coin deal like "Coins of the Depression" and will send you a 1930's Buffalo nickel and a Mercury dime for like $5 and hidden in the fine print, $3.99 shipping and handling. Then when you get the coins, in the package they send you "on approval" a few older Lincoln pennies and maybe a Barber dime, always sealed in their famous plastic bags, and if you like them, you can send in $3 or so for them, and then they'll send you more coins "on approval." Obviously some people don't return the coins, so they need to really mark up their prices to offset their losses. This marketing ploy must work, as they have been in business a very long time. I believe their target customers are those who know nothing about coins and/or those who believe their hype and would buy anything. Thus the bad rap. I have a friend who got sucked in years ago (pre internet), and who had a hard time getting rid of them.

I will say they have purchased a fair number of coins from me and paid really good prices, they bought a lot of the damaged stuff I could not sell after a year or two buying and selling at shows in the later 1980's.

I used the approval service from Littleton back in the early 1980's (keep in mind, I was a kid). A large number of my wheat cents and Buffalo nickels came from them. A little overpriced, but considering where I lived, the distance to the nearest coin store, and my not knowing about coin shows yet, I feel it worked out pretty good.

However, getting them to stop can be a challenge. I had to move away to stop the monthly approvals from coming.

Lets say one has "messed up" and is currently getting these coins from this company that everyone is saying overprices everything... how would this individual get them to stop sending these coins to them?

I actually like littleton coins but I should stress that I only buy them aftermarket. Therefor the prices are much better. A few months ago when I wanted to have fun with hotel coin buyers one of the products I took with me was a silver eagle in a littleton blister pack as to say I knew nothing about coins. (crooks big time)
