Dollars Out Of Circulation In 2012?

If I heard the nightly news correctly, the Mint will be discontinuing the Presidential dollar as a circulated issue to Collector issue only...1 billion dollars in the vaults prompted the change...this will be interesting to follow...Boom, all of the sudden, the entire series has changed bigtime..2012 mintage numbers will most likely be substantially lower, perhaps in the yearly Kennedy half dollar range of 1-2 million, which went through a similar change in 2003.
What the Mint Officials will do(can you say melt?)with the surplus Dollars is a big unknown...perhaps if they dropped the $12.50 per 250 coin Direct-Shipping Program, many vaulted Dollars COULD get into circulation...the surcharge basically ended any hopes of dollar movement, in my opinion, and, was just the wrong step to take to make amends for frequent-flier purchaser abuse in the early days of "Free Shipping", and, Dollars at cost.
