I won a bunch of Dos Mundos 8Rs at the Baltimore Ponterio sale. They are an early Xmas present from my sweet wife. She prefers 8s to 1/2s and is encouraging me in that direction.

There were a couple lots so some duplication. At least one of the 1764s (Gil M-8-44) is interesting. Note the position of the dot above MF on the obverse to the left of the crown. One dot is high. the other is low. There are variations like this between dates, but I have never seen a differently placed dot on coins of the same date. Is this something to get excited about?

What do you guys think?

I'm not a big pillar collector, so I don't know specifically, but my very general impression is that they get more worked up over DIFFERENT design elements, rather than variation within the SAME design element. At the same time, it's a stark distinction between different dies... Morgan collectors would certainly get into that if one of those dies was rare. I bet in time, the same attention to detail will become mainstream on series like this which are popular with U.S. collectors.

The first coin is beautiful even though it appears to be cleaned? Or maybe just the way it was photgraphed?
Yes I have seen different dot positions on same dates.
Can you post the coin's edges?

Reading between the lines of that edge question... they're Ponterio coins. If something was amiss authenticity-wise coming from them, God save us all.

The first piece def. has been cleaned... but hey, we can't ask for gem original in the bulk lots, can we? At least it has solid detail.

I strongly second the opinion stated above that Ponterio is normally one of the very best at attributing 8Rs. So I would not normally believe he would pass on a fake even in a bulk lot.

That said - Ponterio has recently merged with Bowers and his day to day hands on involvement MAY POSSIBLY have changed. If either of the Ponterio's actually looked at the coin personally and stated an opinion - I would believe it is real ............

But what if it was some low level employee just learning the job?

We should always check and be cautious especially with this particular series.

First coin is cleaned, still nice. Nothing outstanding in the lots, but I might have a weak lower arc.

I asked THE guys about the lots and they had checked them out. In fact they were kind enough to authenticate some other 8Rs I was not sure of.

Don't know if they still have it but I used to enjoy sifting through their box of fakes. some really good ones and some really bad examples.

Good point, and that probably is what actually happens. The Bearded One is right there during the auctions, so he's definitely involved, but I doubt he or the son are individually inspecting each and every average pillar 8... One would figure, however, that being around the Ponterios you'd pick up a decent grasp of basic Spanish coinage through osmosis, if nothing else.
