Some of you may know from my previous posts that I'm a big fan of the pre-1842 Zacatecas eagle design for Mexican 8 Reales cap'n'rays. I get particularly excited to find a great example of an 1842 Type-I piece that still bears the 1825-1842 eagle design. The die style changed early in the year, so the Type-I's are rather challenging to track down in decent condition.
I got pretty excited when I saw what is described as an 1842 Zacatecas 8R (Eagle Type of 1841) in NGC MS62 plastic. Looking at the auction, however, I noticed that the coin itself, while a great example of the 1842 Zacatecas 8R, is not the early die style and is obviously misattributed by NGC.
I'm going to send a note to Heritage and see if they can add this information to the description.
Thank you, Mathieu! I bought that coin from a local dealer before I even knew of the die change that year purely based on looks. It was a nice surprise when I first attributed it and its what started me on early Zacatecas cap and rays.
