I was in Las Vegas so I forgot to post here on CCF, and I posted this on a couple different sites.
Anyway, I went on the very first day and also the last day of the Ontario SoCal Coin Show. (I had a three day pass ^_^ )
The first day was fun, but the dealers were not very negotiable. I saw dozens of 1921P&D
Mercury dimes, the two Coins I kinda want, though they were very overpriced, overgraded, hairlined or cleaned. :hrm:
Close to the end however, I saw a nice NGC 1909S BN (Pand, that means Brown)
Lincoln Cent. The cost was $85. Not bad, especially for a Certified example. But I wasn't LOOKING for a 1909S, just happened to notice its price. But I love any U.S. Coin, basically, and I like to have a balanced collection, not to mention I know
Lincoln Cent grading well. I spent 15 minutes examining the Coin, looking at the wheat, blahblah. I liked the look and the nice even wear on the Coin. I was wondering if I could negotiate. The dealer was nice, not a jerk like a lot of them are, and was very willing to help me and was very happy to see a young collector interested in Key Dates.
"Would you take $80?" I asked, after consulting my books.
"Eeeeh, I guess I can let ya have it for $80" he said. I looked at the Coin and asked the most feared question to myself.
"Is it... CLEANED?" I didn't think so after a few more minutes of examining. (Does it look cleaned to y'all?) But I hadn't been looking for a 1909S. A 1921P&D Dime, and of course, the 1809 Dime were the Coins I was after. But $80! Such a deal! I finally put down the $80. Deals like that don't come often. Anyway, it was close to closing, so we went home.
Two days later, I convince my mom to take me to the show at the last hour, hoping for some deals. :) ^_^ :D
I went to the man who sold me the 1909S, and started to look at more of his stock. I spent 50 minutes of that last hour examining his stuff. He offered me a 1914D Lincoln in SOLID G-4 for $190. A 1912S Nickel F-15 PLUS for $395. darn! I only took $120. :P
So I look at some of his semi key date stuff that I have been looking for ever since I started collecting. 1924D Cents, 1914S Quarters, BLAHBLAH! (but the 1916D
Mercury dime ALWAYS outshined in my thoughts :epic: )
Anyway, I saw a nice minimal problem 1821 Bust Dime n his case for $20. Not bad. I looked at the Coin, a couple light digs in the top of the Coin, but a pretty nice AG-3 type Coin. I didn't own a Bust Dime. So I said
"I'll give ya $16 for it."
"Weeell, all right, it's yours."
I looked at more of his stuff (HE HAD A LOT) And I saw a few 1926 Nickels. One was $16 and one was $10. Both were G-4's, but I like the $10 one better, and for the 1926 Buffalo, not to mention the lowest mintage in the series, I felt it was a good price. And then I looked at a VG-8 1924D Cent, a semi key. It was $39, a bit high. I looked, and examined, examined looked, and the dealer told me he'd sell them both for $47. I looked, and to end this ramble, I added a few nice semi keys to my collection. What do y'all think? Did I do ok? Were the prices reasonable?
