Quote: Contemporary counterfeits of the realm for the advanced collectors is one thing ...

AMIDA 17: Most people that buy off-metals such as in brass, copper, german silver or debased silver that were issued con-current with the regals say in the 18th Century are advanced collectors rather than someone just simply accumulating Lincolns in a Whitman. These issues are called contemporary counterfeits. Some call them forgeries, non-regals or simply fakes. Replicas or copies are more denoted for say MODERN issue fakes.

They make them because people continue to buy them. It is that simple.
I can understand why some people would want to have a fantasy coin, especially when they pay the appropriate amount for it. While it is not for me, I see nothing wrong with this.
I can understand why some people would want to deceive another for pure profit. This I have a real problem with, as should everyone else in the hobby. The best we can do is to continue educating the public.

Lets not get Replicas confused with fakes. Fakes are intended to defraud. Replicas are just that: a replica of something else. Replicas serve a very small, but nonetheless important function, at least in the Ancient Coin World. How many people can afford to collect, say, gold coins of the Roman Republic? How about Celtic Staters? Some of these coins simply aren't available, at any cost, to a collector. If they are available, cost is prohibitive for all but the wealthiest collector. True, there are many inexpensive types of ancient coins, but some others are simply are not available to the average collector. One of a kinds are not that uncommon in ancients, and if there's only one, and it's in the British museum, you aren't going to grab another off ebay. A replica can be shown as a representative of the type, or just to indicate that yes, gold Aureii of Nero were coined; here's what one looked like. ColonialJohn is quite correct, despite his somewhat thin skin; there are people who collect "contemporary counterfeits" of coins; some of them are quite fascinating. How many US 5 cent piece collectors don't want a Henning nickel to add to their collection? There are TONS of Contemporary Counterfeit 8 Reale coins out there. There are some counterfeit Spanish 20 Reale gold pieces made in Russia...from Platinum, which was worth less than gold at the time.

I agree with the person saying that replicas are meant to fill a hole in an album. (Eg. the 1936 dot cent in a cent album.)

Well, I'm from China and I know what's real.
Then your one of the few. Try to tell which Beanie Baby is from China and which are made here. And if it wasn't for all the misspelled words, no one would know what is and what isn't from where. So many instructions for electronics are misspelled so how come they know how to spell when they make our coins?
