Quote: This mean nothing: They make them because people continue to buy them. It is that simple. It means a lot if you understand simple economics.

I understand what you mean. What I wanted to know was why people wanted to buy them.

Quote: I understand what you mean. What I wanted to know was why people wanted to buy them. Now I understand. I should interpret your full question a bit differently. The first part of your question was "I'm just curious: why do people make replica coins?" (For this part, my original answer still stands). You also asked, in the same sentence, "Why? Who would ever buy them?" I overlooked your intent. People are buying them, so they will continue to be made. But you want to know why people buy them. I am not sure which came first, the replica maker or the replica buyer; I do not think it matters. People obviously desire them, for whatever reason. My best guess is that they fulfill a fantasy. My next best guess is that some people use them to deceive others.

Does the Franklin Mint make replicas?

If those coins there are miniatures of the actual coin, then they are not replicas, they are copies. Replicas are perfect copies (and I would dare say that they are not the same as "copies"). Replicas can be misused just like automobiles.

Just type in the words "1933 American Double Eagle" and an abundance of results should come up.

Fakes, counterfeits, forgeries, copies, etc. have been around in coins, currency, furniture, cars, planes, windshield wiper blades and almost anything possible. My faked items are knives made in Pakistan. All look nice but rust as fast as you buy them. So many items are made in China, Pakistan, etc. and so few people realize that. So many companies advertie their products are made in the USA, YET, probably 75% to 90% of the parts are made in either China or Mexico or ? I really like Duricel, Dinocell, Denocel and on and on until I have no idea how to spell the real ones. So many people want something they can't really afford so a copy, fake, etc makes it all OK. The only problem I see with all the fake, copies, counterfeits, etc is how many people have them in their collections and don't know. Not until they try having them authenticated.

The miniatures I posted did come from the Franklin Mint. Why my Father got them is beyond me. I thought they were neat when I was younger. They did come with information cards for each coin so it is sort of an educational set. A bit more fun than looking at photos, but now I can barely see them even with a magnifier. Some of them did not age well even though they were kept in their case in a dry environment. If I ever get good with Macro Photography, I might get bold and post some more. I think it would be fun to see the discussions about how accurately the original designs were reproduced.

Quote: Sometimes they are just fun. These are so small it's obvious they are replicas. They could have made them a little bigger. Here's a possibility of why the replicas you have are smaller than you expected. If the person that made you replica coin made it at the same size of the real coin, then you could sell them at the high price of the original coin, and it would be harder to tell if it's real or not. There's a reason for making replicas smaller instead of bigger, which is that you could us replica to fill a hole in the collection book.
