A number of people here have indicated that they are finding more 1977 10c coins than they would expect. I have found the same thing as well. In $50 of 10c coins I found 1 * 1972 (12.5 million) 5 * 1977 (10.9 million 0 * 1985 (2 million) 2 * 1991 (4.8 million) 1 * 1997 (5.8 million) I am wondering if the figure of 10.9 million coins may be incorrect? 5 times as many 1977 as 1972 seems odd, but then again the numbers of 1977 compared to 1991 and 1997 look roughly in proportion (for this pretty small sample). What does everyone else think?

I'm currently working on some mintage data taken from old Coin books I have that were published in 1974, 1980, 1991, 1996 and 2001.
For the 1977 10c, this is what I've come up with:
1980-24.065m 1991-24.056m (probably a typo, not mine though) 1996-10.94m 2001-10.94m
So.....What happened to the data between 1991 and 1996? 13.12m coins disappeared. I think it's more than likely that the 2 earlier figures are closer to the real mintage numbers, that's why there are still so many of them in the wild.
I'm only checking the data for 1966 - 2001 as the data from 2001 on is available on the RAM site, and I can only assume that it's correct regardless of what figures are published in the coin books.
life is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved

Wow that is great detective work. So it looks like the real mintage for 1977 10c is about 24 million, which agrees with my own noodling experience. Sometime in the early 90s a mistake was made in the mintages and 20 years later it has never been rectified. Does anyone have Macca's email address?

I have The Australian Coin Catalogue First Edition by Alan J Patterson published in 1981 and it has the 1977 10c mintage as 24,065,000

Thanks bjw
I think that provides confirmation that the 24 million mintage is correct and that the modern figure of 10.9 million is definitely wrong

Interesting that the error is also on the RAM website. I wonder if they were the source of the error, or if they got their figures somewhere else?
